Vale Peconi, an Italian-Mexican shortboarder from Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, came to Reina Calafia with her daughter. My mum used to take me on her work trips too, so seeing them together brought back a familiar excitement.

For some, mothers and daughters sharing a life in surf may be a familiar sight. For me, it still feels extraordinary. During my years in Bali, I rarely saw this among local families, even on an island known around the world for surfing.

Seeing two generations of women finding joy in the ocean together is something I don’t take for granted. It’s beautiful to see a daughter grow up with her mother’s love of surfing and discover her own.

Perhaps one of the most important things we can pass on to the next generation is the ability to regulate our emotions: to stay grounded while taking in a constant flow of information, bring our attention back to the body, and respond to what we feel. To me, surfing is the ultimate practice for this.

There are many ways to learn how to face fear, recover from a fall, and try again. In surfing, these lessons come through an experience we want to return to. Fear can be part of it. But so can the desire to catch another wave, no matter how old you are.

@marcella_bijou came to Baja for a week. She has been here almost a year.
It started with a surf contest, a rental car, no cell service, and a road she had never driven. Complete strangers waved her into the shade, handed her food and drinks, and made sure she was taken care of while she was shooting.
That was the moment she understood that Baja was not just a beautiful place. It had a community unlike anywhere she had been.
She is still here.

She landed at the East Cape for a surf competition and never got around to leaving.
That was @margoi introduction to Baja: a last-minute flight, a place she knew nothing about, and a stillness that undid everything she thought she needed. A year later, she’s still there, and it shows in her photography; light, calm, powerful, and raw. The same words you’d use for Baja itself.
