Everything worth knowing about the private clubs around The Main Line, PA, in one place.

Comment LOCAL and I’ll send you my full Main Line Local Guide.

If you’re moving to The Main Line or Philadelphia suburbs, the club you join shapes how you spend your weekends.

So here’s the short version:

For golf, the name everyone drops is Merion Golf Club in Ardmore. One of the most decorated courses in the country — hosted six U.S. Opens. The waitlist is long and membership is by invitation. For a more accessible entry point, Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square is the other serious option in this corridor (hosted the 2010 PGA Championship — it’s no consolation prize).
For tennis and swimming, Merion Cricket Club in Haverford. Don’t let the name throw you — the cricket is historical, but the tennis program is serious and the pool scene in summer is exactly what you’d imagine. It’s one of the most socially active clubs on the lower Main Line.
For dining and events, Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne. Formal in the best way, with a dining room and event calendar that feels like a different era — in a good way.

Each has its own culture, its own sponsorship requirements, and its own version of Main Line membership. The Merion Golf waitlist alone is a decade-long conversation for some families.

If you want help matching a neighborhood to the club you’re eyeing, that’s my kind of thing.
