Un grand merci à Evelyne Léard-Viboux pour ce deuxième volet de sa chronique publiée dans Les 5 du Vin, à la suite de sa participation à Furmint Février 2026.

Après un premier article consacré aux différentes expressions du furmint sec, ce second volet se tourne vers l’un des grands patrimoines viticoles hongrois : les vins liquoreux de Tokaj.

L’article revient sur les particularités de ce terroir historique, le rôle du furmint et des autres cépages de l’appellation, ainsi que sur les différentes expressions des vins doux de Tokaj : Szamorodni, Fordítás, Aszú et Eszencia.

Plusieurs vins et domaines illustrent cette diversité, parmi lesquels Kikelet, Füleky, Máriásy et Lenkey, avec des profils qui témoignent à la fois de la richesse de la tradition tokajienne et de la vitalité actuelle de la région.

La chronique se conclut par un focus que j’ai eu le plaisir de rédiger pour Les 5 du Vin autour de deux vins d’István Balassa : le Tokaji Szamorodni Doux 2022 et le Tokaji Aszú Villő 2019.

Deux vins particulièrement intéressants à mettre en regard : des niveaux de concentration remarquables, mais deux méthodes d’élaboration profondément différentes. Le Szamorodni est issu de grappes botrytisées vinifiées telles quelles, tandis que l’Aszú repose sur la sélection individuelle des baies atteintes de pourriture noble, ensuite macérées dans un vin de Furmint.

Une belle occasion de rappeler que les grands vins doux de Tokaj ne se résument pas à leur richesse en sucre : leur identité repose tout autant sur l’acidité, la tension, la salinité et la capacité du furmint à préserver fraîcheur et précision jusque dans les expressions les plus concentrées.

Bij de eerste slok dacht ik echt dat we een topper in handen hadden: perzik, honing, hooi, rijpe appels, munt, limoen. Echt heel veelzijdig voor een eerste slok. Maar naarmate de fles vordert, wordt ie toch een stukje vlakker. Niet dat je ineens met een plens water in je glas zit maar de wijn weet me richting de bodem van de fles toch minder te boeien. Super aan het begin, prima aan het einde.

-"Colour is very clear & clean, while chilled its quite a light hay & straw colour, slightly more apple green than lemon considering this is a 5 year old wine. Nose has lychee, pear, lemongrass, white chocolate, white floral notes with hints of dill & parsley. Mouthfeel has lemon spritz, pink grapefruit, limoncello sweetness, more lychee, crisp pear, good body, good oiliness reminds me of yoghurt. Finish is dry, tart, medium plus acidity, limestone, green apple, grapefruit zest."-

I think this is fantastic, great wine, great expression. Delicious......

Balassa’s Szent Tamás Cru Among the wines chosen for best sommelier of France Final 🥂🤩

I had the privilege of attending the Best Sommelier of France final at Lyon’s magnificent Théâtre des Célestins, where the city hosted one of the highlights of the French wine calendar. As a wine professional of Hungarian origin, passionate about Furmint and the organiser of Furmint Février for the past four years, I was both surprised and delighted to discover that, among the seven foreign wines selected for the third challenge, was a dry Furmint from the Szent Tamás cru, produced by one of my favourite estates, István Balassa, whose wines are imported into France by Dionis.

The challenge placed the finalists in the role of a sommelier advising a chef preparing a menu of Lyon’s iconic regional dishes using only foreign wines. Each bottle had to be presented as it would be to a guest in a fine dining restaurant: its origin, terroir, grape variety, winemaking, style, ageing potential and gastronomic pairings all had to be explained and justified.

Among the seven wines, the Szent Tamás from István Balassa was the second bottle presented. All three finalists correctly identified it as a dry Furmint from Tokaj. Two recognised the Szent Tamás cru, while the winner, @clement_sommier Clément Sommier, went even further, demonstrating an impressive knowledge of the vineyard and its distinctive characteristics.

For me, this was far more than a pleasant surprise. It was tangible proof that a profound paradigm shift is taking place : Tokaj is not only the birthplace of the world’s greatest botrytised sweet wines. Its exceptional volcanic terroirs are equally capable of producing some of Hungary’s finest dry white wines—wines with the precision, complexity and gastronomic potential to stand confidently on the tables of the world’s best restaurants.

Kudos to the organisers, especially Gaëtan Bouvier, for making such a courageous and inspired choice. Congratulations also to the incredible birthday boy winner 🤩 Clement Sommier and to @augustin_belleville Augustin Belleville, who finished second, and @audrey_brugiere Audrey Brugière, who completed the podium in third place.

¡Tomate el buque! Y andá a conocer la bodega más antigua de Uruguay.

Mientras me anoto ese pendiente, en el stand de @vinosynegocios me esperaba @johanavazquezv para brindarme un panorama de 170 años de historia.

Y si los fundadores son alemanes, no debería haberme sorprendido un Gewürztraminer para comenzar. Pero yo soy así... Agradezco siempre que haya un Pinot Noir (acá, en tono rosado) y un gran blend de blancas (chardonnay, chenin y pinot meunier) criado en barricas.
Y sí, Tannat. Un delicado rosado y un poderoso Gran Reserva con 3 años reposando para brindar notas a "bosque, miel y chocolate"...

Promediando el segundo tiempo de la feria vislumbré un stand allá a lo lejos, tan lejos como Europa.

Cuando tenía 6 años viaje a España con toda mi familia. Nos acogió una tía abuela en Galicia. Ese primer Albariño de @terrasgauda me llevó a mi niñez.

Debut absoluto probando la uva furmint, originaria de Hungría, de @balassabor.

Y el final del viaje me trae nuevamente a España para probar los Mencía de @bodegaspittacum.

El vino te lleva a tus sueños, a tus recuerdos. Dejate llevar.

Consacré aux vins dégustés lors de la 4ᵉ édition française de l’événement, organisée à Paris à la veille de Wine Paris par Wines of Hungary // Magyar Bor/ en partenariat avec vinumregnum, ce premier volet s’intéresse aux différentes expressions du furmint sec.

Parmi les vins dégustés figurent le Vision Tokaji Dry Selection 2021 de HOLDVÖLGY Borászat és Pincerendszer / Tokaj-hegyalja, Mád, les cuvées Megyer 2019, 2018 et 2017 de Samuel Tinon , le Furmint 2006 de Disznoko - Tokaj, le Furmint 2005 de ROYAL TOKAJI Borászati Kft., ainsi que deux vins d’István Balassa : le Szent Tamás 2021 (en photo) et le Furmint 2024.

Prévu à l’origine sous la forme d’une seule chronique, ce retour de dégustation se poursuivra avec un second volet consacré aux Tokaji Aszú.

A fotón látható andezit kőzet a tarcali kráter tó mellől származik. Az andezit, a vulkanikus szőlőtermő talajok egyik legfontosabb alkotóeleme. A Mézes-Mály dűlő az egyik legérdekesebb geológiai összetételű terület. Az andezit mellett megtalálható még itt:
riolit, riolittufa, dácit, obszidián, lösz, nyirok, kötött agyag is.

🇮🇹Nel buio della cieca, parla solo l’energia del vulcano. 🌋🍷
Ci sono serate speciali in cui i pregiudizi cadono e restano solo le emozioni. Un viaggio sensoriale alla cieca tra suoli lavici e mineralità sferzanti, iniziato con due bollicine dell’Etna Nord (Carricante e Chardonnay) tese, vibranti e pazzesche.
Poi, via le etichette:
🥂 I Bianchi: una sfida ad altissimo livello tra Furmint ungherese, Malvasia vulcanica di Lanzarote, Carricante siciliano e Assyrtiko di Santorini. Ho il cuore ancora diviso a metà tra l’Ungheria e la Grecia: due calici che mi hanno stregata.
🍇 I Rossi: un blend della Languedoc, un Listan Negro di Tenerife, un Etna Rosso elegante e un Taurasi 2015 monumentale. Tra tutti, l’Aglianico in purezza mi ha colpita dritta al cuore: una bottiglia eccezionale e complessa.
Per chiudere in bellezza, la dolcezza ipnotica di un Pedro Ximénez pazzesco.
I grandi vini diventano immensi solo se condivisi. A fare davvero la differenza è stata la compagnia: un gruppo meraviglioso che ha reso questa serata indimenticabile. Grazie di cuore a tutti! 🔥

Some nights labels disappear and only pure emotion remains. A blind journey through volcanic soils and sharp minerality, started with two stunning, vibrant sparkling wines from Mt. Etna’s north slope (Carricante and Chardonnay).
Then, labels off:
🥂 The Whites: an incredible showdown between a Hungarian Furmint, a Volcanic Malvasia from Lanzarote, a Sicilian Carricante, and a Santorini Assyrtiko. My heart is still torn between Hungary and Greece—both completely captivated me.
🍇 The Reds: a Languedoc blend, a Listan Negro from Tenerife, an elegant Etna Rosso, and a monumental 2015 Taurasi. Among them, the 100% Aglianico truly stole my heart: an exceptional and beautifully complex bottle.
To wrap up, the hypnotic sweetness of a phenomenal Pedro Ximénez.
Great wines only become unforgettable when shared. Beyond the bottles, it was the company that made the real difference: a wonderful group of beautiful souls. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! 🔥
