“I come from a long line of Belfast men, who are often married to country women, like my mother,” Dornan said. “She came from outside.
My family history is pretty bland, because there is literally no outside influence other than Irish, so I feel 100% Irish.
A lot of the work you usually put into a role to discover or feel comfortable with who you’re playing was unnecessary.“
(...) “We had so many people approach me and Ken and all the other cast members saying it reminded them of their childhood, and most of them don’t come anywhere close to Belfast,”
Dornan said.
“At its core, it’s about that family trying to navigate unprecedented situations and divisions and their future, which had a lovely resonance.”

(…)”Ken did a really lovely thing in rehearsal when he sat us all down for the first time, then he asked us a lot of questions about our childhoods. Some of these were very expository,” Dornan said. “That vulnerability was a great way to break down barriers and make us all comfortable with each other.
People were crying and saying, ‘I haven’t talked about this since therapy!’”

With a lot of improvisation and a supportive director, Dornan said he felt more at home on set than on any other film project he’s worked on, even with acting legends like Dench and Hinds on hand.

“You always get dirty when you go into a scene as an actor, and if you’re not you shouldn’t be doing it,” he said.
“But I felt really free thanks to the atmosphere Ken created.
Everything is heightened in a way, and just enough to make Buddy’s vision of life clear.

On the subject of family, you were kind enough to come and be part of a story about families in your hometown.
So, without blushing, I would like to ask you about my film Belfast and how you felt when you got to it.

JD:
I hope to make you blush because the opportunity to work in Belfast with you… it was almost like someone had packaged this perfect job.
You’re at the helm and [being able to work with] other actors who I have the utmost admiration and respect for:
Judi Dench and Ciarán Hinds.
And it’s literally called Belfast, the city where I was born, raised and raised.

The script was really beautifully crafted – and what I love about what you wrote and what we created is that it’s about the people themselves, the resilient, funny, loving people of that city.
That’s what you’ve captured so beautifully, I think, and you don’t see that often.
I thought you brought out the human side of the people of Belfast.
And it was really exciting to be able to go on that journey with you.(...)

💗I feel the emotions in my heart reading Jamie’s thoughts on Belfast..
A decidedly touching film, with special actors who truly gave Kenneth all the love possible..
And Jamie truly gave his heart for this project..

Glamour:

(…)When did you first meet?
And what were your first impressions?
Caitriona Balfe:
We met in Toronto about two years ago. We were both there for separate projects, but...
Jamie Dornan:
I actually had two films there [at the Toronto International Film Festival].
Caitriona:
Oh, actually, sorry, he had two films coming out.
But Drake Doremus, who directed one of your films [Endings, Beginnings] that you were there for, I worked with him a long time ago, so I think he was the one who introduced us.
And it was one of those things, we know a lot of people in common, our paths have been slightly similar, and it was a very strange thing that we hadn’t met until this point.
And I thought, Wow, he’s not as tall as I thought he was.
Jamie:
I remember thinking she was too tall for me to work with.
And when I heard it was you, I thought, I’m going to be on an apple crate for most of the shoot.
Caitriona:
That didn’t happen. [Laughs.] Jamie, have you ever watched Outlander?
Jamie:
No. You know what?
I haven’t, no. I’ll just admit it.
I wouldn’t try to lie, but Caitriona actually said yesterday that I’m apparently not the target audience.
So I don’t really know, married men who are pushing 40, right?
Was I the target audience seven years ago when it started?
Caitriona:
No. Well, I wouldn’t say it was a demographic that... initially responded to our show, right?
I would say it’s a more female audience and, at least initially, I think it was people who had read the books.
So the first books came out in ‘92.
I would have said they would be slightly older.
Jamie:
I see, yeah.
Caitriona:
[Now] we have pretty much all ages watching it.
Jamie: It’s a tall cast.
Caitriona:
Sam [Heughan] is taller than you. Tobias [Menzies] is taller than you.
Jamie: Come on, man.(...)
