Looking for art classes in Balham? Local resident & practising artist Justine Formentelli runs small-group, artist-led sessions @balham_art_classes for children, teens & adults – right here in SW12!

With a maximum of just six students per class, everyone gets plenty of personal attention.

CLASS TIMES (Mondays & Tuesdays):

- 4.30-5.30pm: Ages 5-10
- 6-7.30pm: Teens & adults

Want to give it a try first? Justine also offers a trial class!

Classes take place on Pentney Road, close to Balham station. See booking details below!👇

With 14 years of teaching experience and a Master in Fine Art from City and Guilds of London Art School, Justine brings plenty of curiosity, experimentation and play into every class. She regularly exhibits her own work too, so students learn from a genuine practising artist.

Classes explore mixed media drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and sculpture in a calm, supportive setting. Each session is practical, varied and personal – students explore different techniques, artists and longer projects, all while receiving individual guidance from Justine.

Justine’s approach is structured but generous: students are guided and encouraged, while given the space to find their own way into each project.

They will also be running a nature-inspired printing and collage workshop on Wednesday 29th November from 7pm - 8:30pm.

Creative workshop coming soon! A traveling exhibition featured at multiple locations in Dubai including DIFC Art Nights and World Art Dubai, the upcoming show marks the first appearance of Sister Octopi in the UK. Taking cues from its eponymous octopus, the versatile work transforms and adapts to inhabit new environments, making each installation a unique experience.

Justine, who is also the art instructor behind @balham_art_classes and her collaborator Natalya are hosting a creative workshop inspired by the project on Saturday, March 11th from 11 to 1pm at the Omnibus Theater, Clapham Common Northside.

Sister Octopi is an immersive installation resulting from a long-distance collaboration between two artists and cousins: Dubai-based Natalya Konforti and London resident Justine Formentelli.

This long haul project began in 2017, following the suicides of a brother and cousin in close succession. Devastated and searching for a way through grief, the cousins began an artistic correspondence which eventually grew into the rich threads of an unusual family tapestry.

The work explores themes of identity, belonging and adaptation, paying tribute to the strength and resilience of sisterhood in the face of loss and tragedy. Separated by several oceans and time zones, the two artists responded to each other’s work and emotions, panel after panel. The process brought solace, deepened their connection and contributed to strengthening other family ties. Inspired by the natural world, their experience of expatriation and family heritage; this suspended universe is an invitation to wander along tentacular detours, immersed in a world of connections.

Justine and Natalya's workshop will take place from the 7th to the 29th of March at the Omnibus Theater, Clapham Common Northside London SW4 0QW. For more info visit @jformentelli and @sisteroctopi

Calling all local arts & crafts enthusiasts! @brasserievonne, the new Art Deco Belgian bar and restaurant which is opening in Balham in July (exact location under wraps for now), is creating a space for local makers to exhibit their wares & also host workshops. They're even creating their own art installations themselves (pictured) – more details below!

Owner, Yvonne wants the venue to embrace the best of European café culture, including being a place for people to meet and enjoy the arts – and she'd like local makers to play a big part in this.

Anyone interested in exhibiting or hosting workshops in the new venue, please email Yvonne at info@chimneybellsevents.co.uk

The drawing you see here is of one of the pieces of art being designed for the venue by @ieva_bee – a local artist friend of Yvonne's.

Ieva tells us:

“Working on art installations, you have to consider many aspects of the project, including understanding the story of the venue and what will be taking place there. Yvonne loves Art Deco style and music – especially jazz – and so I felt that using vintage instruments were perfect to use for the wall.

“Our initial sketches really helped bring this to life and we're very excited about the look and atmosphere that we're going create. Watch this space!"
