I was so pleased to be named BALI Chalk Fund Student of the Year this year, as the South Thames regional winner.

The award is based on a written application, where I wrote about making things that last, choosing materials and planting carefully, bringing my two careers together, and widening who gets to shape our outdoor spaces.

Changing from a career in TV and film to garden design in my 40s has been daunting at times. But it has meant a great deal to have this encouragement at the start.

Thank you to @londoncollegegardendesign, my tutors, and @balichalkfund.

Swipe for a few pieces from my year of study, including the technical side.

I thought it was about time I did a proper introduction.

Before moving into garden design, I spent nearly two decades working in film and television. I art directed, made props, and eventually settled into graphic design, which brought together my love of print and printmaking.

Throughout that time, I was always thinking about composition, hierarchy, and how to communicate something clearly at a glance.

I’ve realised that gardens ask many of the same questions: What do you see first? Where does your eye travel next? What is given space, and what is left out? How is the space experienced, and how does it make you feel?

The difference is that I work in plants now, rather than pixels.

Yesterday saw the resurrection of the famous annual conference ! Held at the iconic Royal Society in London , the home of many life changing conversations and science , it just seemed the right start! The sun shone, the venue was fab! The staff were on point and we were treated to an amazing conference of keynote and breakout sessions which got people buzzing and debating, the networking, which I would argue is as important to debate, refer , and catch up and compare! A chance to reflect, work on your business and not in your business , food was superb , the mix of designates equally and feedback was amazing ! I left exhausted but pumped up and fuelled up ! Massive thanks to all the troops at Landscape house that were amazing 🫶👏👏 @balilandscapeuk @bali_golandscape @balichalkfund #landscaper #landscaping #garden #gardendesign #lovemyjob @landformuk

A great start to the year with a feature in Pro Landscaper Magazine.

This year is all about investing in our people, upgrading our HQ, strengthening our systems and building the foundations for long-term growth — including our journey towards ISO 9001.

Exciting times ahead…

This is the bit that’s not always seen. Turning up early, setting up fast, recording live, moving quietly and leaving. Events move quickly, conversations even faster, so we capture them while they’re happening. A live special of Dig Deep Podcast recorded at the BALI Awards 2025, produced for British Association of Landscape Industries. We can’t wait for you to hear it.

A significant portion of the Water Gems team traveled to London last Friday to accept two national awards for our Maggies Forth Valley project and our East Lothian Ponds and Cascade project. We were accompanied by Mark Dunion from @mgd_outdoor_electrical , who managed all the electrical work for both projects, @darrenhawkeslandscapes , who designed Maggies Forth Valley, and Yvonne, the center manager at Maggies. We all had a wonderful day, made even more memorable by the posthumous recognition of the late Nigel Gray with the 2025 Special Award for Personal and Professional Dedication for his leadership of the Maggies project. Our congratulations go out to all the other winners and category winners. It was a truly special day.
