🩰 The lack of accessible training opportunities in pointe shoe fitting has real-world consequences. As Amanda Hill, founder of @balletpro.ltd, notes, “If a shoe isn’t fitted well, dancers can find pointe work painful or get injured, and their instinct is usually to blame the shoe rather than the fit.”

📚 Several organisations, including BalletPro, are working to address this gap, developing training opportunities that range from one-to-one mentorships to university-accredited courses. These programs aim to equip fitters with the knowledge and skills to fit pointe shoes properly and help dancers have the best possible experience en pointe.

🩰 Ask a dance teacher how they were trained and many can name the teaching body that certified them: the @royalacademyofdance, @istddance, @cecchettiusa. Ask a pointe shoe fitter the same question and the answer is usually some version of “I learned on the job.” For a role that can shape whether a young dancer thrives on pointe or ends up injured, that is a striking gap.

📚 DRN explores four programs working to fill the training gap: @juon_pointe in New Zealand, @balletpro.ltd in the UK, @thepointeshop’s Progressive Pointe Method in the U.S., and @naspontas in Brazil. From one-to-one mentorships to online training and a university-recognized course, these programs differ in length, philosophy, price, and approach.

🩰 But none represents a universal standard. Until an independent body sets training requirements and recognizes professional fitters, a dancer’s experience on pointe will depend heavily on who happens to be fitting their shoes—and on how far that person went to learn the job properly.

We were absolutely delighted to be part of their Pointe Shoe Fitting Week and couldn’t have wished for a warmer welcome! 💕

It was such a joy to meet and assist the talented students, giving them the opportunity to explore and try alternative pointe shoes to find what works best for them.

A very special thank you to @c.iveyray ,who organised the event so beautifully and made us feel incredibly welcome and supported throughout.
