A self-proclaimed “fangirl of Ohio,” Chris Melody Fields Figueredo knows a thing or two about our people power. ❤️

In 2023, Ohioans faced an attempt to raise the threshold for passing constitutional amendments from a simple majority to 60%. Voters said NO — decisively.

Hear Ballot Initiative Strategy Center 's executive director reflect on that victory, Ohio’s resilience, and why our state continues to matter in the national fight to protect direct democracy.

What is Missouri's Amendment Three?

Spoiler Alert: It’s a proposition introduced by the Missouri legislature 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 voters already passed their own initiative to ensure abortion rights in the state. But with a more conservative state government, the legislature is now trying to upend that.

🎧 On this week’s episode of the Block & Build pod, @ballotstrategy’s Jennifer Parrish Taylor and Cayden Mak talk about this and how more state ballot initiatives are paving the way for more reproductive freedoms across the country.

Ballot Initiatives are our most effective tool to defend repro rights in this moment.

Jennifer Parrish Taylor (Policy and Legal Advocacy Director at the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center) explains why and how everyday people have to protect abortion access and reclaim community power, state by state.

Since Roe v. Wade was overturned, voters in 10 states have successfully passed or refuted abortion-related constitutional amendments in defense of reproductive rights. From massive victories in red states like Kansas and Kentucky to ongoing battles in Nevada and Missouri, organizing locally and directly at the ballot box is proving that bodily autonomy is what the people want.

“We don’t have an election integrity problem in this country. Countless studies have shown there has never been enough voter fraud to change the outcome of an election.
What we’re seeing instead is what we call ballot candy—issues designed to motivate certain voters around problems that don’t actually exist.” - @qmsavwoir Director of Programs & Strategy at The Ballot Initiative Strategy Center (@ballotstrategy)

Colorado Power Building Summit Day 3 left us all with lasting memories.
Every person who joined us for day 3 stepped out of their comfort zone and into a movement.
Together, we knocked on doors, shared stories, connected with our friends, families, and neighbors, and made a real difference in our communities.
For the next several months, we will be canvassing and phone banking every week. Check out our 🔗 and find a time to join us!!

Day two of the Colorado Power Building Summit was somehow even more inspiring than day one.

Today, participants put their new skills into action and made real phone calls. Phone banking can be nerve-racking (we know) but people pushed through the anxiety, found their courage, and survived to tell the tale.

We learned from incredible national partners, One Colorado staff, and leaders from communities across the state. We laughed, connected, practiced, and kept building the people-powered movement Colorado needs.

Today was all about YOU! How can we get you (yes, you!) to join us in this fight?

Folks called their families and friends, spoke up about their experiences, and made connections across the state!

Some beautiful views combined with beautiful people. Every participant today made phone calls or sent texts, we all joined in on the fight!

We all found support in different ways.

As we said yesterday, if a lane doesn’t exist, we will make one. If there is a barrier to entry, we want to help get around it. Reach out to the team and let us know how we can help!

And hold the line we will! With over 100 active and engaged participants, we are JUST getting started!

And even through all the serious education, we still found time to laugh and connect. We still made space to be in community while we learned how to defend our families and communities.

There were people in the room who have been organizing longer than we’ve existed as an organization! The power, knowledge, and experience in the room was palpable.

And as always, we had the tiny dog to lift us up along the way! The post is formatted like a collage Several people are sitting against a window wall making phone calls and is continued on the next slide. In the lower left corner there is a smaller image showing a panel of Colorado leaders. A lace decal lines the top left portion of the page and the bottom right portion. Text reads Colorado Power Building Summit Day 2 and is split between two pages. There are two cut out paper letters. The letter O and the letter N which is split between both page 1 and 2

More than 70 leaders from across the state showed up for Day 1 of the Colorado Power Building Summit

Text on the photo reads ‘cheers to becoming someone’ and ‘Colorado power building summit day 1. The image is continued on slide two. Superimposed on top of the image are two photos of orange flowers.

The connections made on day 1 will sustain us through the work.

Photo from slide one continued. Half an image of pronoun pins, event staff participates in a discussion activity. Both images are continued on slide 3 text reads you would’ve

Participation is key! Engaging with the content we are learning is one of the best ways to learn and get ready to show up for our larger community!

Photos continued from slide 2, graphics of stars, a shell, a lemon, lace, and wired headphones are over the images like a scrap book. There is a photo of a woman in a patterned blue and purple shirt holding a microphone. Superimposed in the top right corner is an image of the audience continued on slide 4

And we are allowed to goof off too! While this is serious work, we can still have fun. Our joy carries weight and we deserve to cultivate it.

Image description: 2 photos split the screen. On top a blurry face peaks into frame in front of a person opening a water bottle. On the bottom is a woman curiously listening to a peer. Graphics on the image include lace and a bust with rainbow sunglasses text reads looked up to

Learning from powerful advocates is an incredible opportunity!

I recently had the honor of speaking on a plenary panel at the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center’s Road Ahead Conference in Cleveland, OH. I shared our historic campaign to amend Virginia’s constitution to protect our freedom in Virginia to make reproductive health care decisions without fear of government interference or criminal punishment.

It includes protecting our freedoms to access prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, birth control, abortion, miscarriage management, and fertility care. It allows restrictions on abortions during the third trimester except when the patient’s health is at risk or the pregnancy cannot survive.

And I can’t wait to join Virginians for Reproductive Freedom to launch the campaign on Saturday, May 16th at 12 PM in Richmond!

We’re in Cleveland! 🧡 Landslide Political is proud to sponsor Road Ahead and be with the BISC team this week. Openly sharing ideas and exploring how progressive coalitions can build power is critical to creating lasting change this election cycle. Landslide is grateful to be part of that conversation!
