160 objects embodying the essence of an artist.

If you were asked to create an object that embodied the essence of your favorite artist, not something that looked like their work, but something that felt like it, how would you do it?

It’s been really cool watching my students wrestle with that question and come up with 160 completely different answers.

Over the last few weeks, they’ve started taking what they discovered through these objects… material, rhythm, repetition, tension, light, movement, enclosure… and translating those ideas toward architecture.

The artists behind the work:
Louise Bourgeois · James Turrell · Rei Kawakubo · Pharrell Williams · Nine Inch Nails · Avicii · Roberto Matta · Fiona Apple · Misty Copeland · Iris van Herpen · AJR · Brian Eno · Joan Miró · underscores · Nicolai Bergmann · Georgia O’Keeffe

I love seeing all of these little experiments together. Each one is such a different answer to the same question.

Bryan Cantley’s Lecture “Exhaustive Drawings” will be held on Monday, September 14, at 4:00pm in the Architecture Building lecture hall 100 on the first floor.
The lecture and accompanying exhibition present a “long game” project — a slow reading and development of a drawing typology, grounded in Georges Perec’s An Attempt at Exhausting a Place in Paris. Framed as an ongoing project, the work becomes a language-development condition: an exercise in generating an infinite set of architectural languages from a finite condition.

CAP lectures are free and open to the public. The image is one of Brian Cantley ‘s illustrations of multiple black and white architectural drawings layered on top of each other.

This summer Estopinal College of Architecture and Planning (ECAP) students are partnering with @ecorehabmuncie on a one-of-a-kind design-build project in Muncie’s Old West End.
Students are helping design and construct a high-performance, affordable home while gaining invaluable hands-on experience throughout the building process. As part of the project, they are fabricating the home’s exterior wall system using a panelized construction method and participating in key phases of construction to better understand how high-performance building systems come together in practice.

Faculty mentors: Tom Collins, Pam Harwood, and Cesar Gelido

Happy National Intern Day to our BDG Architects Architecture Associate Interns!

This summer, we’ve been lucky to have a talented group of future designers learning, growing, and contributing to the team:

Joshua Hanje @au_cadc , Samantha Dolansky @usfsacd , Isabel Anderson @ballstatecap , and Miranda Arvin @ballstatecap !

We’re grateful for their hard work, curiosity, and perspective, and we can’t wait to see where their careers in architecture take them next.

Join us in celebrating them today, and follow along for more behind-the-scenes moments at BDG Architects.
