If the goal is to ride a bike, sitting on a stationary bike for hours on end is not going to help much. Basketball players performing isolated dribbling without an opponent playing defense will not see much improvement ball handling in a game setting. A rock climber who practices a single route is not going to feel comfortable on El Cap. The same old solutions will run you into a dead-end because nothing will ever change if nothing ever changes. Plugging in different implements, tasks, or environmental challenges push the athlete so they cannot fall back on their default solution because the default will no longer fit. Identify the gap, could be informational, biomechanical, etc that’s a rate limiter to the athletes current solution. Then engineering the environment so the athlete is funneled toward a solution or exposed to heightened awareness to the “problem” is incredibly useful. When making a change or trying to guide one to a particular outcome, it cannot be vague. It’s so interesting to me how athletes become so tied to the task at hand when you do something as a simple as provide an implement they have never used or rarely use. They feel it, look at it, and are automatically calculating what it is going to take to compete the task well. This is the type of engagement that should always be present in practice of any kind. The passive misses in catch-play skyrocket when you just tell an athlete to go “play catch”. When you give them different implements, present specific targets, set daily goals, or tell them to throw different shapes throughout? Much more engaging to the athlete, much more beneficial work. Opt to create a richer internal model of the skill that better transfers to the unpredictable demands of competition. Meet the pitcher where they are, and figure out a plan to get them where they need to be. The goal is building an athlete that can accommodate ever changing conditions. Was fun to see this in action with some of @jyhacks athletes take reps with glares from the windows in the cage and how it played into contact quality and swing decisions. When the glare went away, the group seemed to barrel more balls than they had all summer. Hmm
