Every time I’ve gone to South Sudan🇸🇸 I’ve had a life-changing experience. The people, the culture, the kindness, the patriotism… everything about this place makes me proud to be African. And I’m eternally grateful for the opportunity to help tell their story.

For the last 2 years I’ve been making a film about the rise of the #BrightStars, the South Sudan national basketball team. I thought I was making a basketball documentary, but I quickly learned this story is really about hope, healing, and building a national identity. Basketball just happens to be the pen they’re using to write their narrative.

What does it mean to be the youngest country in the world when the people have inhabited the Nile Valley for centuries?

When the Bright Stars played team USA🇺🇸, arguably the greatest basketball team ever assembled, and lost by just one point, the number one trending topic on X that night was #SouthSudan. Overnight, people who laughed and underestimated this team were silenced. People who thought they didn’t have anyone over 6’3’’ learned South Sudan is home to the tallest people on Earth. People who thought they came from nowhere were re-introduced to Manute Bol, Luol Deng, and a new generation of Nile Giants. People learned that South Sudan gained its independence in 2011. So…. what does it mean to be the youngest country? It means as a nation you have the challenge of defining your place in the world.

Our film is in service of this mission. To go from obscurity to the Olympics is a monumental achievement. Our film will show you how it happened. To go from enduring the longest civil war in Africa to becoming an independent nation is a testament to the struggle and those who gave their lives for South Sudan. Our film will show you how it happened.

After 2 years of filming, this past weekend we finally wrapped principal photography. I want to thank my crew for their hard work, long hours, and dedication. To @ssbfed and @luoldeng9 I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing us to be part of the journey and the trust to tell this story.

#GiantsOfTheNile 🎬 coming soon…
