👀 hidden in a basement, 16 courses, and a menu that changes every month. bar sawa feels like part omakase counter, part japanese speakeasy, making the whole experience feel a little different from your typical sushi dinner. 🍣

the omakase is $185 per person, and what i liked most was the variety. instead of just nigiri after nigiri, you start with five appetizers, move into nine pieces of nigiri, then finish with dashi somen and their soy sauce cheesecake.

the chefs and bartenders were incredibly attentive throughout the night. and if you’re drinking, don’t skip the cocktails. the japanese negroni was great, but the refreshing shiso cocktail was my favorite. 🍸

here’s everything from our september menu:

1. chawanmushi | japanese steamed egg custard, renkon lotus root purée, red snapper
2. katsuo | smoked + charred skipjack tuna, ponzu onion sauce
3. ebi shinjo | shrimp mousse stuffed shiitake mushroom, snowflake salt
4. kurodai bozushi | black sea bream pressed sushi
5. ankimo | monkfish liver
6. renkodai | yellowback sea bream, japan
7. akami | marinated lean bluefin tuna, japan
8. live scallop | japan
9. sawara | king mackerel, japan
10. ika + uni | japanese squid, santa barbara sea urchin, dashi soy sauce
11. shimaaji | striped jack, japan
12. kanpachi | amberjack
13. chutoro | medium-fatty bluefin tuna, ginger + garlic-infused soy
14. unagi | braised freshwater eel
15. dashi somen | shrimp + fish dashi, somen noodles
16. bar sawa soy sauce cheesecake

the menu changes every month, so your lineup might look completely different when you visit, which is a pretty good excuse to come back.
