Jewelry is the form my practice often takes.

But the work has always been bigger than the finished piece.

I develop interest in what happens when inherited knowledge meets contemporary design when traditional references, materials and techniques are allowed to evolve.

This is what I do with what I inherited.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: BARA SKETCHBOOK @barasketchbook

This one comes with a little history. 🥹

Before Arit Nyok Gallery, there was Artists Speak Up, an artists' collective created to document and respond to the realities of Nigerian society through art. Bara was one of the artists who graciously said yes to that project. ❤️

So it feels particularly special to present Toluwanimi Adediran Williams, professionally known as Bara Sketchbook, for our very first Artist Spotlight.

Based in Kaduna, Bara draws deeply from the rich tapestry of Northern Nigeria, tracing forgotten trade routes and invisible labour through his use of buhu sacks and other discarded materials, bridging the worlds of art and sustainability.

With a strong foundation in color theory, identity exploration, and the human experience, Bara’s work reflects personal and societal narratives through a fusion of portraiture, abstraction, and mixed media.

In recent years, Bara’s work has shifted toward focusing on marginalised communities in Northern Nigeria, exploring themes of commerce, consumption, survival, and the cyclical nature of life. Through his innovative use of materials and artistic techniques, he captures the pulse of life in Northern Nigeria and beyond.

Dear friends, it is with great pleasure that we invite you to encounter a selection of Bara's work and take a closer look at an artist whose practice, and history with us, makes this presentation especially meaningful.

A little peek because i feel like each piece deserves its own moment; this is one of the original artworks that will be a part of our apartment set up series.

There’ll be a full unboxing video showing all artworks esp as this is my very first collection.

He uses the human face and figure to reveal memory, emotion, identity, and the untold stories carried by ordinary people and combines painting, sculpture, and installation to examine identity, memory and the lived experiences of marginalized communities in Northern Nigeria.

He’s had Art fairs at Art X Lagos (Nigeria, 2021); ARCO Lisboa (Portugal, 2023). Fnb Johannesburg art fair (he was the only northern Nigerian artist shown)
