Celebrating the Power of Women in Art & Leadership

At Kean University, we honor the strength and resilience of women through both art and leadership. Outside Hynes Hall at the College of Business and Public Management, the bronze replica of the iconic Fearless Girl statue by Kristen Visbal stands as a powerful symbol of women’s leadership and the importance of diversity and equality.

This semester, the Galleries at Kean echo this spirit by showcasing exhibitions exclusively by women artists. These extraordinary exhibits highlight diverse voices, creative perspectives, and the enduring impact of women in the arts.

Artist Barbara Minch, featured in the "Fiercely Feminine" exhibition, has not only built a rich artistic career but also holds a proud history with Kean University as an alumna. Minch was taught proper drawing by Carl Burger. Furthermore, Joseph Zapytowski taught her ceramics. Both artists greatly influenced the work and Minch's’ creative process which can be seen in her exhibition at the Nancy Dryfoos Art Gallery.

Minch graduated from Kean University with her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964 when the institution went by the name of Newark State Teachers College. Since, Minch has received several New Jersey awards over her six decades of artistry. Additionally, she has exhibited her art in several locations such as the Newark Museum, NJ State Museum, Midland Center for the Arts, Ella Sharp Museum, Flint Institute of Art and more.

Her current exhibition, "Fiercely Feminine," explores the societal construct of fierce femininity. Fierce Femininity is defined by Minch as jot, compassion, intelligence, wit and community. The powerful body of work demonstrated in this exhibition is an accumulation of collages, sculptures and paintings all of the purpose to exude strength in a subtle feminine way. The themes celebrate Minch’s family's diverse heritage, friends and human experience along with her intense belief in self, forging ahead and a strong commitment to growth.

Exhibition Run: January 30, 2025 - June 20, 2025

Her work explores the powerful and evolving concept of feminine identity. In fact, a concept that isn't just about physical strength but also one that encompasses emotional depth and resilience. Her pieces such as those above incorporate elements like joy, compassion, and wit. These qualities make her work all the more fascinating because they challenge the traditional view of femininity by presenting it as a multifaceted dynamic. Minch's return to Kean with a new body of work is truly an exciting moment not just for The Galleries, but also the entire community.
