Since 1906
New York City's oldest italian restaurant

Jean-Michel Basquiat, Suzanne Rodier, Andy Warhol, and Jon Gould at Barbetta in New York City, 1984.

As noted in the book "Art + NYC: A Complete Guide to New York City Art and Artists" (2011):

"Located in the heart of the Theater District on Restaurant Row, Barbetta has been on the New York dining scene for over 100 years. The classically upscale Italian restaurant has lost some of its sheen over the years, but its lush courtyard and formal dining room have hosted the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor. The restaurant was a favorite of Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, who came for the scene more than the food, satisfying their expensive tastes by ordering the priciest things on the menu and not eating them. The pair would sign autographs and make sketches for the staff and customers. The restaurant appears in Julian Schnabel's 1996 film Basquiat."

@nycrestaurantweek is now in its 34th year. This is one of the desserts @scarpettarestaurants on their @nycrestaurantweek menu and why I get so excited for Restaurant week - which ends on August 16 this year , so make your reservations ASAP. ‼️ FYI : The debut of Restaurant Week was in 1992 and was a lunch only promo designed by the legendary restaurateur Joe Baum ( whose restaurants included: Windows of The World ; Rainbow Room ; Four Seasons Restaurant and Tavern on The Green ) and Tim Zagat to feed all the delegates and reporters in town for the 1992 Democratic Convention. They were able to get 95 restaurants to participate including @barbettarestaurant @carminesnyc @palmrestaurant @sardisnyc and @sylviasrestaurant #nycrestaurantweek #scarpetta #restaurantweek2026 #nyc #supportsmallbusiness

Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol with Karen Binns, Suzanne Mallouk, Mary Boone, Jeanine Basquiat, and Joy Bouldin during a dinner party at Barbetta in New York City on May 5, 1984.

They were celebrating Jean-Michel's opening exhibition at the Mary Boone Gallery. Barbetta closed in February 2026 after 120 years in business. The restaurant appears in Julian Schnabel's 1996 film 'Basquiat.'"

According to Suzanne Mallouk in "Widow Basquiat: A Memoir" (2000) by Jennifer Clement:

"Jean's favorite restaurant was Barbetta on 46th street. He took me there many times. Sometimes with Shenge. Once with Rammellzee. Rammellzee was very uncomfortable there. He thought it was too fancy for him. Jean had a 'house account' there and never paid. The manager loved Jean and so did all the waiters. Jean always left enormous tips. The manager always went down to the wine cellar and brought back some one-of-a-kind spectacular red wine for Jean.
Once I was there with Jean and Andy Warhol and other friends. Andy started picking up the spoons off the table and signing them with a big black marker and handing them out to the people at the restaurant. Then Jean started signing the spoons with crowns on them. Then a whole signing frenzy started between the two of them. They began signing anything they could find on the table. One girl was wearing a black leather coat and both Andy and Jean started signing and drawing all over it.
Sometimes we went alone and Jean would order all the most expensive things as well as a private stock wine from the wine cellar. Then before the meal arrived, he would go to the bathroom and do coke and come back and not want to eat any of the food and we would leave.
The strangest times, however, were when it was only Jean, Andy and me. Andy was very much in love with Jean and so he was jealous of me. I was always on guard with Andy. In front of me he would describe how beautiful other women were to Jean. ... It was a constant struggle to be with Jean when he was with Andy. Andy couldn't stand to share Jean in any way and Jean loved to feel that he was so important. Jean loved Andy because of this adoration and he loved to feel the power he had over Andy."

The absolute best place in NYC to watch the city move while time stands still. 🚕✨

There’s something unmatched about overcast days on Restaurant Row. The colors pop a little more, the air feels cooler, and the patio seating just hits different.

You can sit under the canopy of trees with a plate of fresh pasta, watching the iconic yellow cabs and buses streak past in a blur of Manhattan chaos while you’re perfectly paused in the middle of it all. It’s that exact contrast—total movement mixed with slow dining—that makes Hell’s Kitchen feel like magic.

Are you opting for wood-fired pizza at Bar Dough or handmade pasta at Sicily Osteria? Let me know your pick below! 👇

Save this guide to NYC Italian food:

@barbettarestaurant , a beloved old-school spot, has sadly closed after many years, but the city still has plenty of classic flavors to enjoy.

I love @da.umberto for antipasti plates and nostalgic dishes that bring back the classics you grew up with.

For something new, @cisiamonyc in Hudson Yards is popular and worth checking out.

And if you’re near a show, don’t miss @orsorestaurant in the Theatre District or Remi for a pre-theater meal.

@barbettarestaurant who recently shut their doors after 120 years. Oddly enough this is a matchless matchbox.

I can’t believe I never shared these photos of my handmade Gilded Age era gown from the @nyhistoricalcostumers dinner at @barbettarestaurant last year! 💚 I am so lucky the group was able to do a couple events there before they closed ✨ What special memories!

My current work in progress is a baby blue robe à la française for the ball in May at @chateauversailles and I am a busy bee but SO excited for my next historical costume event 🤩 Can’t wait to get back with the lovely local group again sometime this year though!

Grazie, Molto gentile @barbettarestaurant for an evening I will always remember in my 25+ years living in nyc. I was so fortunate to be invited to Dame Laura Maioglio’s service to meet those she cared for and those who cared deeply for her. Even her couture dress maker (in purple) and scientists who worked with her Nobel prize winning husband (who adored her and the generosity of her cuisine!). And I have a new friend from last Saturday with a lovely French server who refilled my glass with Champane 🍾. And the food! Oh mio, braised short rib, hazelnut cake with crème, poached pear, #piedmonte style. Brava. Thank you for joining me @mhealy007 and wonderful hearing stories of Laura from the Dames attending who knew her. Rest in peace Dame Laura Maioglio esteemed, beloved proprietor of New York City historic 120 year old @barbettarestaurant. Laura passed last month at 93 years, may she rest in peace. Opened in 1906 by Sebastiano Maioglio, Barbetta has been the oldest restaurant in New York still owned by its founding family in the Maioglio-Astor Townhouses West 46th restaurant row nyc. I will quote the words of our President of Les Dames d’Escoffier New York (LDNY) @orentjill @lesdamesny on her passing “Laura lived an extraordinary life shaped by family, culture, and a deep commitment to hospitality, guiding Barbetta for more than six decades with care and distinction”.
