The cherry (or fig 😃) on top of our pilgrimage was the time we spent having our baptism blessed by Monsignor Robert Tucker, our leader, at the site where John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River.

Next to us was a group from Africa who were having full immersion baptisms.

We were on the Israel 🇮🇱 side of the Jordan, but it is divided (as is visible by the ropes and the 🇵🇸 Palestinian flags just on the other side).

People from Jordan are strictly forbidden from coming to Israel and vice versa, so guards stand watch on both sides here.

We were blessed to have felt safe almost everywhere we traveled. We were also blessed as Protestants to be embraced by the group of Catholics with whom we traveled. They were extremely respectful of our theological variances and we tried to return those same graces to this lovely and loving group of new friends!

From the cross, to the mourning stone, to the grave…all were experienced inside the walls of Jerusalem. We waited in line to enter the tomb, and suddenly it was over.

We moved so quickly among all these amazing monuments that we couldn’t even fully process what we’d seen.

He did ALL of this for you and me!

The morning we walked the Via Dolorosa began by entering the old city of Jerusalem through the Jaffa Gate. We walked to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher for early Mass in the chapel beside the stone that held up Jesus’ cross.

We re-entered through the Lion’s Gate to pray the stations of the cross. Like many areas throughout Israel, armed guards stood at the entrance to the Via Dolorosa.

The wall was rebuilt in the 1500s and has seven main gates, 34 watch towers and averages 40’ in height and is approximately 2 miles in length.

In a grotto beside the cave of the Virgin Mary’s tomb, we celebrated Mass. we then headed across the street to the Garden of Gethsemane. At the foot of the Mount of Olives, near Mount Moriah sits this small garden where so much happened during Jesus’ ministry and in His last days. Here Jesus prayed while his disciples slept nearby. Judas betrayed Him with a kiss and Jesus was arrested.

Beside the Garden is the Church of All Nations or the Basilica of Agony. Inside is the Rock of Agony believed to be the stone where Jesus prayed.

The basilica in Palestine believed to be the birthplace of Jesus Christ has survived invasions, rebellions and earthquakes and is now threatened by structural integrity. Built like a fortress, this church is one of the oldest continuously operating churches in the world.

As one enters the tiny hole behind us (small to keep animals out) you witness an unbelievably gaudy sanctuary. But tucked behind the altar area is a small stairway leading to the grotto which holds one of the most sacred Christian sites, the silver 14-point star marking Jesus’ birthplace.

Here, Jesus calmed the storm, walked on water, taught many lessons and performed many miracles. It was the setting for Christ’s 3rd post-resurrection appearances, also.

We took a boat ride on a vessel similar to those used in Biblical days and we swam in the Sea of Galilee. We visited Magdala on the shores of the 2nd lowest body of water (fresh water) in the world.

The Wedding Church (in the crowded midtown streets) of Cana (also known as Kefr Kana in Galilee) is believed to be the site where Jesus performed His 1st miracle changing water to wine at a wedding.

Beneath the church are the ruins of an ancient 1st century Jewish-Christian synagogue. The large stone is a replica of the kind of containers used for storing/serving wine.

Jim & Ellen Varney and Angie & Jim Kros renewed their wedding vows here. ❤️❤️

We then tasted wine from the area and checked into our Tiberias hotel that sat right on the Sea of Galilee!!!

The Dead Sea deserves its own post, just because. The view from our hotel lanai of the Dead Sea was magnificent, floating in it was super cool.
