JC Santos makes an impressive directorial debut with Caryl Churchill’s A Number, an understated yet haunting production that explores fatherhood, identity, and parental guilt. Starring alongside Bart Guingona, Santos takes on three distinct characters, showcasing his remarkable versatility as an actor. Bravo, JC Santos! Not only did he do a fantastic job playing 3 different roles in Caryl Churchill’s play A Number, it was also his directorial debut and he smashed it! So proud of my Ricky Lee #Bashedmate! It’s a short, taut, impactful sci-fi piece on the ramifications of cloning but Santos keeps the focus on the human element; never letting the drama get out of hand and letting the play’s own words handle the emotions. JC and co-actor Bart Guingona just have to be. A heady piece that is so striking for today’s issues considering it was first produced in 2002. #ANumber #theater #curtaincall

I came to see Caryl Churchill’s psychological play A Number,  starring Bart Guingona and JC Santos, and I was hypnotized by the whole production. First off, I love WHYNoT’s unique setup. They did away with a conventional stage and turned the room into an intimate space where the audience sits around the actors. The mirror panels, striking lighting, abstract visuals, and haunting sound design all work so well together. Every detail adds to the mystery and tension of the story. JC Santos is fantastic in three different roles. I was impressed by how he gave each character a distinct personality, shifting effortlessly between them without losing their individuality. His delivery feels so natural, and you can feel every bit of his characters’ rage, disgust, curiosity, and frustration. What a talented man! Bart Guingona is just as compelling as Salter, a father with plenty of secrets and some seriously questionable motives. You can read so much in his expressions alone. He captures the character’s contradictions, defensiveness, and attempts to justify his choices so convincingly. Together, he and JC have an electric chemistry that makes every exchange worth watching. A Number reminds us that while others may shape our beginnings, we must take ownership of the choices that shape our future. We may not get to  choose the circumstances we are born into, but we are responsible for the lives we build and the consequences our choices leave behind. If you love psychological dramas that challenge your ideas about identity and morality, and theatre productions that break away from conventional stage setups, A Number might be right up your alley. Catch it while it’s still running. Go in blind, and thank me later. This is a production worth experiencing for yourself. 5/5 stars. Showdates are on October 10, 11, 16, 17, and 18 at WHYNoT, 4/F Karrivin Studios, Makati. Produced by WHYNoT, in collaboration with Necessary Theatre. Directed by JC Santos.  Get your tickets onsite or through Ticket2Me. @j.c.santos @barguin @whynot.mnl @thenecessarytheatre @ticket2me @migueluy666 @_mudskipper Thank you, @vitoroblesantos @vitalks2024 for the media access! 💗🙏

Watched the opening night of A Number by Caryl Churchill, starring JC Santos and Bart Guingona, a fascinating play that uses a scientific premise to ask questions that are fundamentally human. At its surface, A Number explores cloning, identity, and the ethical implications of creating another version of a person. But beneath the science is a far more intimate examination of fatherhood, accountability, individuality, and the uncomfortable possibility that our identities are shaped as much by what has been done to us as by the choices we make for ourselves. Churchill's writing leaves room for ambiguity and does not supply convenient moral conclusions. It asks whether genetic sameness necessarily means personal sameness, whether parental love can coexist with selfishness (my blood boiled and left eyebrow arched at some points), and whether the desire for a second chance is always as noble as we would like to believe. And perhaps most interestingly, whether being responsible for someone's existence necessarily means taking responsibility for the person they become. JC Santos, lauded a triple threat in the 50-performance Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank 4, shines in A Number as another version of a triple threat (triplet? I kid. 😆). What I admired was his ability to give Bernard 1, Bernard 2, and Michael Black their own psychological identities and voices. The challenge isn't simply to make three characters appear different. It's to make the audience believe that despite their shared genetic origins, they are individuals whose experiences, emotional responses, and ways of navigating the world are entirely their own. One is chilling, one is anxious, and one is optimistic. (cont. next slide) JC Santos demonstrates that versatility is not merely about changing one's voice, mannerisms, or temperament. It's about understanding the internal logic of each character and allowing that understanding to inform the performance. For a directorial debut, I also appreciate his choice of material. This isn't the kind of production that can hide behind spectacle. With a small cast, intimate setting, and dialogue carrying much of the dramatic weight, the actors have very little room
