Mongolia’s brief summer brings a collective urgency to make the most of the sunshine while it lasts. Young people emerge with a hunger for life after the winter and their cultural appetite is focused on the country’s cult music festival Playtime, which has been held on 50 hectares of pastureland outside the capital Ulaanbaatar for almost 25 years

Playtime - staged this year in early July - now attracts up to 100,000 festivalgoers, including an increasing number of international visitors. Over the years, Playtime has evolved without losing its authenticity, and showcases everything from Mongolian alt-rock and post-metal to Berlin techno and South Korean indie giants. The festival is one symbol of the “New Ulaanbaatar” - tourism to Mongolia is now booming and Central Asian orientalism is rapidly becoming the zeitgeist. But visibility always comes at a cost and the region risks lapsing into an ethno-kitsch: decorative, hyper-legible and easy to sell

Amina Bold @aminabold writes that the challenge lies in how to be seen without being flattened in translation. After visiting @playtimefestival 2026, she discusses aestheticisation, orientalisation, cultural kitsch and the danger of becoming a moodboard for post-Soviet cool. Oh, and Baudrillard too

Playtime Festival 2027 takes place at Playtime Field, Nalaikh, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from July 2-4

Amina Bold is a Mongolian writer, editor and researcher based between Ulaanbaatar, New York and London. She is a DPhil candidate at the University of Oxford, where her work focuses on climate justice and the law, and a Writing Editor for Serenity Magazine. Her writing on Mongolia forms part of a wider body of work involving interviews with young Mongolian creatives about what Mongol Futurism might look like, with or without the zeitgeist

It was music video made for Lucy's song but apparently their audio was faulty and it wasn't fixable

so they decided to post it anyway but without clip since it didn't match the vibe of the song and also it was better than what they expected by a lot

We thought its too wasteful to just archive this so again we added random song on it xD

hope Instagram doesn't copyright us for using CAS song T^T

Ulaanbaatar is often referred to as a gray city. However, it seems we have stopped noticing the vibrant colors of its buildings. Instead of perceiving them as ugly and colorless, we have become accustomed to their presence. Even if you live near these colorful structures, you may pass by them countless times and unknowingly become indifferent to their brightness. Yet, if you take the time to really observe, you will find that everything is actually colorful.

(Hope Instagram doesn't copyright us for using this song T^T it's just non-profitable video made for purely hobby)

(Instagram doesn't allow more than 90 second song so i had to insert music while editing on it)
