When someone in crisis turns to AI, should the chatbot keep talking or immediately connect them to a human helper?
ㅤ
New State of the Church research from Barna and Gloo highlights a major perspective gap between church leaders and congregants:
ㅤ
1. 94% of Protestant pastors believe AI should immediately connect users discussing suicide or self-harm to a human, compared to 63% of practicing Christians.
ㅤ
2. Pastors are far more likely to advocate for early human handoffs across nearly every scenario, including spiritual, mental health, and relationship crises.
ㅤ
As AI adoption grows, who steps in when someone needs real human support?

When someone is in crisis, who should be on the other end? New State of the Church research from Barna (@barnagroup) and Gloo reveals that while 94% of pastors believe AI should immediately connect users at risk of self-harm to a human, only 63% of practicing Christians agree.
ㅤ
As Daniel Copeland, vice president of research at Barna, notes:
"Crisis care can’t be left to chance. When someone is in crisis, the question shouldn’t be whether a chatbot is good enough. The question is who will be there for that person."

The younger generation is experiencing fear of global war, environmental collapse, economic and political instability, and end-times scenarios, which create both potential and peril.

Yet, Gen Z respondents reported increased spiritual openness, including experiences such as dreams involving Jesus, miracles, perceived conversations with Jesus, peace, and answered prayer.

In his talk, David Kinnaman from Barna challenges us as Christians to guide this spiritual openness toward Jesus while cultivating hope rather than fear.

Are you rotting or ready? 🌱

The seed that’s rotting and the seed that’s ready are strangely alike. Neither can grow without help from outside. Revival begins when we admit we’ve done all we can and ask God to bring the rain.

And the rain is coming. This harvest season, God’s early rains of revival are falling across our nation. On students. On men. On women. On pastors.

“Rain down, you heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness” (Isaiah 45:8 NKJV)

Ready for the rain? Comment READY, and save this for the next dry season.

Good people. Good conversations. Good coffee. A whole lot to think about.

Spent a few days in Nashville last week for THINQ 2026, and it was a gift!

Got to learn from some incredible thinkers and leaders wrestling with the intersection of faith and culture.

From AI and technology to creativity, parenting, discipleship, community, and the future of the Church.

A few things I’m walking away with:

→ We’re made for more than consuming content.

→ Information isn’t the same as transformation.

→ Community requires loving people we don’t get to choose.

→ Creativity, play, and imagination are part of what makes us human.

→ Following Jesus is about more than attending a gathering. It’s about becoming a different kind of person.

And beyond the conference…

Got to stay with some longtime Eastsiders, catch up with a buddy over coffee, make new friends, and explore Nashville.

Some of the best moments happened outside the sessions.

Grateful for the people, the conversations, and the reminder that connection leads to transformation.

There’s a lot to be hopeful about!
