from coma to cathedral 101🤍 #strokerecovery

(I thought we might want to lighten the mood from our family’s last post. I love my rockstar daddy SO much!)

Going public. While many of you know, many still don’t. A year and a half ago today, on March 22, 2025, Dustin suffered a massive stroke. We were told he would essentially be a vegetable, on a feeding tube in a nursing home for the rest of his life.

Anyone who knows Dustin knows how he feels about being told what he can’t do. Today he walks with a cane, sometimes without one. In May, he walked our baby girl down the aisle and danced with her at her wedding. He still can’t use his right arm, and aphasia has taken his speech. But Dustin is still our Dustin. He understands everything. He laughs, rolls his eyes, humors us through ridiculous photos, and pulls us in for hugs when we’re sad. And he has been mind-blowingly (sometimes shockingly lol) patient through all of this.

He posted his last “bucket list” guitar solo 20 days before his stroke and, except once in the hospital, hasn’t played since. We ask him to play with his left hand. The way he says no tells us it’s just for now. His ultimate bucket list post is still to come. ❤️

Alden and Baron’s lives were devastated too, and the way they’ve handled it amazes me. Alden has been her daddy’s warrior and biggest cheerleader, pulling out the karaoke machine, practicing words, and refusing to accept “no” when he seems ready to give up. And somehow she planned and pulled off the most incredible wedding. Baron left Catholic University, his teammates and baseball, to transfer to UT and be closer to his dad. He thew himself into school and life in Austin, doubling down when things felt hopeless. Then, tired of sitting still, he trained for and ran the Austin Marathon.

To our friends and Dustin’s therapists who have loved us, pushed him and celebrated every step: neither of us would be standing here today without you. Thank you.

We still have a long road ahead, with things we desperately want back and so much we don’t know yet. “Day by day” has become my mantra. Dustin has gone so much further than anyone told us he would, and he still has a long way to go.

Today is the first day of fall - a fitting day to announce our new season.

So, for everyone who has wondered where our rock star has been…He’s right here. ❤️

None of this would’ve been possible without God, friends, and family. Super grateful for this opportunity, that was an insane experience and taught me so much.

“For God gave us a spirit not of fear, but of power, and of love, and of self-control.”
