A year ago, all the San Diego FC support groups came together to take on what seemed like an impossible task. Design it, trace it, and paint three massive TIFO panels, all within one week. And impossible is nothing.

It took every single support group member to make it happen. We joke about going home at 3 a.m., but yes, that really happened. We were at the EMO BROWN office tracing at 4 a.m. 😂 The work, the laughs, the exhaustion, and finally seeing it raised inside the stadium made it all worth it.

One year later, here we are. SDFC is in just its second season, and things aren’t going as well as they did during that incredible inaugural year. Players are still learning to play together, other teams have adjusted, and there’s work to be done. Do we want to see changes? Of course. But that’s a conversation for management and ownership to address, and personally, I think there’s a time and place for those decisions.

At the end of the day, this isn’t about excusing the team’s performance. It’s about understanding what it means to be a support group. From San Diego to every group that makes up this community, the name says it all. We support our team in buenas y en malas, in good times and bad. It’s almost like a marriage. 😂💙🩶

Celebrating one year of this TIFO brings back some great memories. Every experience has been different, but the pride of seeing all that hard work come together never gets old.

Another matchday, another roll of film 🎞️

I’ve been having some “fun” shooting an old Yashica rangefinder with some Kodak Portra 400 and Ektar 100 at recent San Diego FC matches. It’s definitely not the most practical setup for photographing a supporters’ section, but I’ve managed to come away with a handful of frames I’m happy with.

As much as I enjoy shooting film, it’s hard not to get frustrated thinking about the shots I’ve missed. Manually pulling focus on moving subjects, dealing with limited light, and having just 36 exposures to work with can be a pain. Especially when you see a moment unfolding right in front of you and know exactly how you want to capture it, but the camera just can’t quite keep up. And with what film and developing cost these days, every missed frame stings a little more 😂

One thing I’ve never really understood is the idea that shooting film somehow makes someone more of an artist or a professional than shooting digital. Photography is photography. You’re still working with light, composition, shadows, and trying to recognize those little moments worth preserving. The tools and processes might be different, but the art of capturing a moment and telling a story through an image doesn’t change depending on what’s in your hands. Personally, for the kind of documentary work I enjoy, modern digital cameras are pretty hard to beat.

Anyway, here’s a few more frames from the stands. The people, friendships, traditions, and all the little moments that continue to make this supporter culture something special.
