/// 1st Winter X Games | Snow Summit ‘97
__

Just watched, “There Will Never Be Another Rider Like Jim Rippey” by @slopechat. Always wondered what happened to Rippey; why he fell off the snowboard map.

Great short doc! Rad to hear the rest of his story.

Mad Respect Rippey!

Pretty insane seeing this go down in person. Winter X Games 1 : first pro comp I went to. Totally new perspective, from vids I’d been watching since 11/12 yrs old. Since that age, all I wanted to do was snowboard & go pro someday. At least, ride as much as possible, anywhere/everywhere.

Seeing & meeting some of my fav pros, at the time, was so sick.

Biggest Impression: Rippey HUCKING double backies; coming super close, but under rotating; slamming hard each time. Didn’t phase him & he kept charging, full throttle. Hit should have been bigger. 😅

He didn’t pull it that comp, but watching those jumps, LIVE: “Front Row”, left a long lasting tangible feeling of pure stoke! I’ll never forget watching these riders throw down with gnarly progressive drive & riding prowess.
___

Side note: I had just started shooting with 35mm SLR Film Camera & getting used to the focus; some pics are a bit blurry.
___

Funny story: Barrett Christy was one of my favorite female riders at the time & after the contest, heading out, noticed her walking just ahead. I was all, Holy Shit there’s Barrett & jog’d up calling her name. “Barrett, Barrett Christy”; she turned around. “Could I get a picture with you?” She’s like “Hi, yeah! Oh, this is my friend Megan Pischke”, who I hadn’t noticed at first. 😅” Hey, I’m Jason.”

Handed the camera to Cameron; pssst, make sure the lens is focused. 📸

After that, had to wait a couple months to finally get my film developed; psyched to see how the pics came out. Especially, shot with Barrett & Megan.

AYE, FUCK! Pic was hella blurred out … bummas!

CAMERON!!! 🤪 Ya Squirely Ass Whanka. 🤦🏼‍♂️ Ha, kidding dude! 😆😉

Barrett & Megan were Fuk’n Awesome (as were all the riders).

Stoked I got to meet them back in the early days.

LIVING LEGENDS.

🤘🏽💗
