What a great day. Started with a talk about Cemetery Birding at the Marble Falls Library. Wrapped the day at #meanwhilebrewery for a Cross Pollinator event with Butler @withbutler and @barry_stone_ . Great discussion about conservation, birds, books, prairies and listening. Thank you Adam Butler @bbrosab for inviting me to Cross Pollinate. It was so great to see some of my favorite Austin conservationist and creatives that I’m honored to call friends … and family. @romeyswanson.wildlife @hthoden @garrytonymerritt @danoko @skipswildlife @walter.bristol @margorichards @andrea_mellard @heatherkuhlken @johnlangmore

👟 Artist Run Club –– Wednesday, August 26, 2026:

🌳 We met under a small pecan tree, sunrise near Barton Springs for a performance by Barry Stone ( @porchswingorchestra @barry_stone_ ).

Stone musically engineered a way to hear the pecan tree sing. Stone explained, “I used a bio-feeback device which by measuring the electrical impulses of the pecan tree transforms that energy into a generative synth soundscape.”

“Any living thing exhibits bio-electrical activity,” he added. After listening to the tree as the sky shaded from black to pink, we joined hands and heard a sound derived from groups’ collective bio-electrics.

We ran the Ladybird Trail loop. It was a sticky day. Jumping in Barton Springs after the run felt like music, too.

👟 Artist Run Club –– Wednesday, August 26, 2026:

🚨 LOCATION CORRECTION — we’ll meet at a pecan tree, not the Monkey Tree. Details below.

🌞We’ll meet at Barton Springs for an outdoor experimental music performance by Porch Swing Orchestra ( @porchswingorchestra ), who some of you will know as run clubber and artist Barry Stone ( @barry_stone_ ).

6:30 am – meet and listen
7:00 am – run
7:45 ish – jump in Barton Springs (free until 8am)

🌳🎶 Stone is planning something special and new for the performance. With the help of a little data sonification, we are going to listen to a tree sing!

We’ll have a 3.5 mile and a 2 mile route. At the end of the run we jump in the Springs. It’s free before 8am. There are runners of all paces. You can skip the run, too. Listen to the art then walk or dip.

🌳 Where to meet:
Park in the Barton Springs parking lot off Azie Morton Road (the Southeast entrance lot). The performance will be at a Pecan Tree off the trail very near the Azie Morton Parking Lot. There is a map on the last slide.

👀 Look for us and we’ll look for you.

i also had the pleasure to write for @glasstire reviewing an excellent sculptural video installation by @c_navin brought to houston by the inimitable @laurathegallery. shortly after that, i was asked by @carlosvielma to pen the catalog essay for his exhibition at @lawndaleartcenter toward the end of his @mfahouston core fellowship.

last but not least on this post is a very recent text/sound piece commissioned by @barry_stone_ for his @porchswingorchestra project. the platform was perfect to try on a more public engagement with my research into the impacts – both intensely local and vastly global – of petromasculinity and the geological. be aware, however, that these projects featured on PSO are hosted online in their entirety for a limited time only!! this one comes down on monday, may 4!!

Up for another week...PSO is pleased to present a text, sound, and image piece by Houston-based artist Lauren Klotzman. I have admired Klotzman’s work for a long time and was blown away by their recent solo show at Ivester Gallery. I especially love the video paintings they make with analog modular synthesizers and the relationships between them and the gouache paintings.

Lauren Klotzman is an interdisciplinary artist who seeks to push the boundaries of what painting is; their studio is a feedback system containing an anti-disciplinary practice driven by many media forms. As a video practitioner, Klotzman is an instrumentalist, operating an analog modular video synthesizer to create “video paintings” via electricity. In all media, Klotzman is interested in how time and energy – as intertwined forces – compose not only the acts of art making, but existence and consciousness. Based primarily in Texas, they are a recent MFA graduate from Yale Painting. Current research topics include historical computing, New Materialism, perception, consciousness, non-human intelligence, and “nostalgia of the future.” They have exhibited internationally, and their writings have been published by Hyperallergic and Glasstire, among others.

One of the highlights of this project was digging through all the source materials used to create our two long players. We didn’t have original files to reproduce the LP jackets (it was the early 1990s!), so we decided to photograph them in their current state. Using the tapes on the covers and reels on the inside labels was a pretty dope idea Barry had, and helped convey how analog everything used to really be. The black ice color vinyl helps reinforce this concept. Kinda looks like actual tape, huh?
