POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Jason Lott nearly hung up his cleats after the 2022-23 season.

But a last second change of heart led to a reinvention of himself, a new pitch, the second best ERA among Australian relievers, a Championship, and a contract extension with the Adelaide Giants.

Here’s how it happened.

The 29-year-old right-hander was coming off a season where he posted an 8.64 ERA in over 13 innings. Opponents hit .313 off Lott.

His numbers were a stretch away from his 2019-20 season where he dialled in a 2.01 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP and caught the attention of the Philadelphia Phillies, who offered him a minor league deal.

Lott started the 2022-23 season a key part of the rotation. But, he was left off the playoff roster in 2023 when the Giants finally won their first championship.

“After a rather disappointing 2022-23 season, I honestly thought by baseball days were numbered. I really considered hanging my cleats up for good,” says Lott.

“But after some convincing and encouraging conversations with Adelaide teammates and coaching staff, I decided last minute that I had more to give. It was time to help the Giants secure back-to-back championships.”

With a small lead in to the season, Lott made some big changes.

He says he went back to the drawing board to figure out what he could change to help find success.

“Considering the league has seen me pitch basically my whole life, they knew I only threw two pitches – my fastball and curveball,” he says. “It was time to add something else to the mix I could consistently rely on. I found the change-up. After playing with grips most of my life I finally found something that works.”

Did it ever. With a new pitch and refreshed outlook, Lott put together perhaps his best ABL season to date.

He put up a 1.86 ERA - second among qualified Aussie relievers - across his 14 appearances and 19.2 innings. He allowed just six walks and opponents hit just .222 off Lott.

“Things just clicked. It gave me hope. I believe my success this season came from my same mentality of attacking hitters with quality pitches in the zone, in addition to having the change up in my arsenal.”

There were a lot of Runs in Canberra this morning, as the Rangers won 18-1 at the Little League Division I Championships 💨

The Rangers scored eleven runs in the fifth inning.

It was a great team effort as Canberra tallied 18 hits. Every player reached base and eleven different Rangers had at least a hit.

Jaxen Bently led all Rangers with three hits. Lucas Tanouye allowed just one run in his 4.0 inning start, striking out six.

How about the kids from the Capital?! 🍩

The Canberra Rangers finish their Senior League tournament with an 8-0 win over Gold Coast!

They were backed by a superb pitching performance from Nathan Adams, and five RBI from Elijah Tanouye.

Tanouye’s bases clearing single in the third inning was the getaway moment for the Rangers. Tanouye had at least one RBI in all three of his plate appearances.

Adams allowed just three hits in his 4.0 inning shutout start. Jack Blundell chipped in with two hits.

What a way to finish 🙌

We want to say a big big thank you to these three right here!! 🥰

Jess Bennett, Emily Colman and Coach Josh Matavesi joined our team from ACT and we were very happy to have them on board - They fit into our team seamlessly!

They all made a positive impact on the team whether it was stepping on the mound, having a hack in the box or spending hours strategising - it was all greatly appreciated!

The 14U Junior Cavs Orange team played fantastic team baseball on the way to the Championship. The consistent hitting of Nate Adams (9-17, 7 singles, 2 doubles) and Mikey Gerstenberg (7-20, 7 singles) was complemented by some power hitting from Jesse Orford (8-16, 2 HRs, 4 doubles, 2 singles) and Chase Hellings (6-15, 2 HRs, 2 doubles, 2 singles). Alex Sargeant (5-13, 1 HR, 3 singles and a double) added pop to the line up when it mattered most, blasting a solo HR in the Grand Final to provide a crucial buffer in a tight game. Will Burnes, Ryley Burrows, Patton Van der Westhuizen and AJ Coles all piled on 5 hits for the tournament, with Jordy Simpson adding 4. Nate Adams led the pitching over three games and 10.1 innings, allowing only 3 hits and two runs while striking out 14. Aiden Bates was the go-to out of the pen, pitching 7.1 innings in relief for NO earned runs and only one hit! Jesse Orford went 4.0 innings in one start for no hits, no runs and 10Ks. Patton Van der Westhuizen, Will Burnes and Brodie Cosier were also crucial in keeping the total runs against the Junior Cavs Oranges to only 15 over 7 games. The hands were clean across the diamond with the boys finishing with a fielding percentage of .956. The baseball was excellent and even more importantly, fun was had. See for yourself...
