Assumption ‘31

I am beyond blessed to announce my commitment to Assumption University. I want to start by thanking my Family, Coaches, Friends, and Teammates. This would have not been possible without all of you. Thank you God, my lord and savior. Without God I would not be the person I am today and I would not be able to achieve my goals. I want to thank my Coaches from Westhill, Coach Riv and DePreta. You both have been there for me since freshmen year and pushed me to be the best on and off the field. Next are the Coaches from Baseball U. Thank you Coach Vigilio for being there for me and putting me in the best situations for my future. Thank you Coach Tim for always being there if I needed someone to talk to and for being a great mentor. Thank you Coach Vinny for welcoming me with open arms to the batters eye and making the person I am today. Thank you Mom and Dad for always taking me to my games, practices, and showcases. Thank you for supporting me through this long process and never giving up. I would also like to thank Coach Rocco and Coach Elliott from Assumption. Thank you for believing in me and giving me a chance to compete for you. Finally, I want to dedicate this to my Grandpa, who always believed in me and wanted nothing more than to see me succeed in baseball. Although he didn’t get the chance to see how far I could take this journey, I know he would be proud of me every step of the way. Roll Hounds!! 💙🤍

Guy had to throw my age in there…

But on a more serious note… I urge and challenge kids today to be less fixated on velocity, and more eager to learn HOW to pitch. I understand when you take a kid to a lesson or to join a travel team, it’s very easy to focus on if their velocity is increasing, if they are throwing strikes and if their team is winning their games. And it is actually hard to see/know if they are improving if those are the only things that they are measuring. But I am telling you (and hopefully showing you), it takes much much more than that.

This is my 17th year playing and I am still learning and finding out new things about hitters and about myself. My fastballs are 80-83 mph here, and as you know, that is not very hard at all for professional baseball. Reading hitters, knowing what to look for, understanding the “whys” of what to throw and when & getting a grasp of how vital and influential the mental part of pitching is… will be what elevates them to the next level.

This picture is a college commitment.

To me, it’s 17 years of memories.

It started with a little boy in diapers with a baseball always nearby. I can still picture him at three years old barreling up line drives in the backyard. Like every parent, you dream they’ll become a good athlete. I was lucky enough to watch him become so much more.

Yes, he’s a very good baseball and football player. But I’m most proud of the person he has become. He works in the classroom. He’s kind. He’s respectful. And when the game starts, he’s one of the fiercest competitors I’ve ever been around.

I’m going to allow myself one moment here…

I’m proud of the job I did as his coach with @brewster_crush_baseball . I gave him every bit of baseball knowledge, every lesson, every hour I had. He listened. He learned. He embraced it. More importantly, I got thousands of hours doing what I love with my best friend. Baseball or not, that alone made it all worth it.

Watching him continue his journey at Montclair State is just icing on the cake. It’s a truly outstanding baseball program with tremendous coaches, incredible facilities, and a true commitment to winning and developing players.

None of this happens alone.

Thank you to my wife, Breanne, for always believing in him and for keeping us from killing each other from time to time. Thank you to every coach who invested in him along the way—Richie Anderson @irontalon , Al Vazquez @samurai_tiger007 , Joe Gileno, Michael Chiappa @choppernobreakz35 , Coach Jay, Coach Dragos @ohjohk , Coach @nickrhodes20 , Coach @joe_smith24 Coach Nordt @odaddio107 , Coach Snyder @juliannsnyder , Coach Ciatto @ciatto_23 Coach Leahy,Coach Ron, Coach Weltman @jwelt1125 Coach Trainor @brewster_bears_baseball Coach Pat Vigilio @baseballuct and Coach Wells @baseballuteams for believing in him and trusting him as the starting shortstop and leadoff hitter on the Baseball U National Team.

And finally, I hope my mom and dad are watching. I know they’d be smiling today.

Love you, Mikey, follow all your dreams. Now go make @montclair_base proud.
