What the Hand Remembers | A Look Back

A final look at What the Hand Remembers at Soho House Hong Kong.

Over the past week, textile, sacred language and the body became different ways of tracing what is inherited, questioned and ultimately made one’s own.

Our thanks to curator Afrodet Zuri, artists Baseera Khan, Keerat Kaur and Radhika Gupta-Buckley, and everyone who spent time with the exhibition.

Baseera Khan | What the Hand Remembers

Baseera Khan (@baseerakhan) is a New York-based visual artist working across public art, sculpture, painting, performance, and music. Their practice traces how material and color carry economies of labor, family, religion, and spiritual well-being, moving fluidly between disciplines to do so. Their work is held in the permanent collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Walker Art Center, and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

At the center of Khan’s practice is the idea that material creates identity, not the other way around. Working through textile, architecture, color and readymade objects, they examine how belonging is constructed and denied, and how inherited objects can carry the pressures of gender, labor and colonial histories.

In What the Hand Remembers, material becomes both evidence and agency. Khan’s works move between beauty and resistance, using color, pattern and form to question what we inherit and how those inheritances might be reclaimed on our own terms.

See more works by Baseera Khan in person at What the Hand Remembers, now on view at Soho House Hong Kong.

The Guggenheim Museum (@guggenheim) explores the enduring influence of Pop art with Guggenheim Pop: 1960 to Now, an exhibition bringing together iconic works from the 1960s alongside contemporary perspectives.

From Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein to today’s leading voices, the exhibition examines how artists transformed everyday imagery, consumer culture, and familiar objects into powerful reflections on society, identity, and visual culture.

By elevating the ordinary into something unexpected, Pop art challenged traditional ideas of what art could be, leaving a lasting impact that continues to shape contemporary practice.

On view at the Guggenheim through January 10, 2027.

What the Hand Remembers

Curated by Afrodet Zuri @afrodet , featuring Baseera Khan @baseerakhan , Keerat Kaur @_keeratkaur and Radhika Gupta-Buckley @grumpstagram

This exhibition brings together three artists working across the Indian diaspora, each using an inherited material, whether textile, sacred language, or the body, not to illustrate identity, but to actively reconstruct it.

Baseera Khan builds installations and sculpture from textile and architecture, treating material itself as a form of politics. Keerat Kaur draws on Sikh storytelling and sacred language to create surreal, devotional imagery. Radhika Gupta-Buckley paints the body as a site of prejudice and resistance.

Each artist holds a different distance from India: two shaped by inheritance alone, one by upbringing. Rather than smoothing these differences into a single narrative, this exhibition presents them side by side: Delhi and Denton, craft and scripture, confrontation and devotion. What unites the three is not where they come from, but how they work, remaking what has been handed down to them, on their own terms.
