In recognition of the 60th anniversary of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, Resistance Cinema and Soul Cinema Sundays present Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution. The legacy of the Black Panther Party extends far beyond black leather jackets, berets, and armed patrols that challenged police brutality. The Panthers also organized free breakfast programs for children, established free health clinics, and developed community initiatives designed to address the needs of Black people who were being underserved and neglected. Their commitment to self-determination meant finding ways to meet those needs within their own communities. Their socialist ideology, community programs, and challenge to existing power structures made them a target of intense government scrutiny and repression. Sixty years later, their legacy raises important questions about community care, political education, self-determination, and what it means to take responsibility for the well-being of our own communities. There are people today working to carry forward aspects of the Panthers’ legacy. What can we learn from their example? What did they build, what challenges did they face, and what does their legacy mean for us now? To my Zimly, thank you for showing me what it truly means to care for others without seeking anything in return. And now, Nina + Simone are united once again, this time as mother and daughter. You carry a name rooted in the strength and spirit of the High Priestess of Soul, Nina Simone, for whom I was named, and a legacy rooted in the remarkable women who came before you.
