Your training and rehab should align directly with your sport or desired activity.

If you’re a hooper who’s “core work” consists predominantly of sit-ups, leg raises, and side crunches, you’re probably not getting much out of it and your back isn’t going to get any better.

Want to reduce pain and improve your core strength in a way that translates to the court?

My go-to exercises typically include
1. Rotation
2. Resisting rotation
3. Stability (ribcage and pelvis stacked) to transmit the most force

(To name just a few).

Tag a friend who needs to try these moves!

There are so many different ways you can recover from hard training or when you’re coming back from an injury.

When it comes to getting the most bang for your buck in reducing tension in our bodies globally and restoring mobility, rolling activities are top notch and something I program for my clients regularly.

The goal -

Move with as little muscle tension as possible.

Utilize the breath to let go of muscle tension.

Reduce gravity’s influence and enjoy the comforting sensory experience that the ground provides.

The outcome -

A relaxed, more mobile body, that will thank you, and be ready to train again the next day.

Chronic stress placed on our system increases muscle tension (tightness) and takes away mobility from other regions in our body like our hips.

This could be related to social stress, training stress, psychological stress, nutritional stress.. the list goes on.

We need this mobility in our hips when moving in the world, training, and doing the things we love to do.

If our hips get locked up, the knee will often overcompensate to make up for it. This leads to more forces placed upon the knee, and, over time, unleashes pandora’s pain box.

If you’re interested in getting to the root of your issue, comment or DM “🧠” to learn more!

🏀 Lack of ankle mobility, specifically with dorsiflexion is incredibly common, especially in the basketball world. Many hoopers unfortunately experience this and will often have issues with ankle sprains as a result.

Here’s the deal: forcing your ankle into more dorsiflexion won’t cut it. It’s about the HOW you get it done! 🔄

For these drills we need to maintain contact with the ball of big toe, ball of little toe, and the inner heel. The wedge allows us to keep our center of gravity back with more pressure on our heel, which then allows us to (counterintuitively) achieve more ankle mobility into dorsiflexion!

Say farewell to crossing your fingers and drilling 30 minutes of “ankle mobility drills” daily.

Ready to up your game, address mobility restrictions and get out of pain? Comment or DM “help” to learn how.

Assessing your athletes at the next level. Understand their movement competency by actually knowing how they are performing specific movements and are they using the correct muscle activation patterns! Sleep is one of the best performance enhancing aids. Yet many athletes don’t get enough sleep.

A research study in college basketball 🏀 players found increasing their sleep to > 10 hours per night compared to 8 hours per night* resulted in significant improvements in free-throw shooting, 3 point shooting and speed.

Also research shows getting more sleep is associated with:
- decreased risk of injuries
- better reaction time
- better decision making
- improved alertness
- improved memory

* According to their sleep journals, they slept an average of 7.83 hrs/night before the study started, and an average of 10.4 hrs per night during the study. Acc to actigraphy (which is used to qualify sleep – week activity based on movement) they slept an average of 6.67 hrs /night on average before the start of the study and 8.46 hours during the study. Actigraphy didn’t capture all naps (players were asked to nap if they could not get 10 hours of sleep at night).

How do you prioritize sleep?

Valslide Hamstring Curls

❇️ Valslide hamstring curl is a calisthenics exercise that primarily targets the hamstrings and to a lesser degree also targets the abs, glutes and lower back.

❇️ This exercise is great for working out the hamstrings.
Start by lying on your back with both heels on the Valslides. Next raise your hips and keep them up as you pull both heels in to your buttocks and then push them back out again. When you first start this exercise you may want to just pull in one leg at a time. Ensure that you straighten the legs at the end of the movement to fully lengthen the hamstrings.

With the pause on team sports in Ontario, it’s a great time to update our knowledge of injury prevention for when we resume!

Did you know that team sports are a leading cause of injury in adolescents?

A new Canadian study from the University of Calgary (JOSPT Jan. 2022) shows how coaches can help reduce knee and ankle injuries in youth basketball players.

✅The study showed that a neuromuscular training warm-up prevention program named "SHRed" (Surveillance in high school and community sport to reduce) injuries
reduced knee and ankle injuries by 36%.😁

With 1/3 less injuries, youth basketball players stayed training and playing for the season!

This neuromuscular training warm-up program was shown to protect both male and female basketball players aged 11 to 18 years.

🏀Coaches attended a workshop where they learned how to deliver this warm-up and when executed 2 times per week, injury rates were reduced.

It should be no surprise that this study showed positive results…

⚽️Neuromuscular training warm-ups have been successful in soccer (FIFA 11+ program) and are now recommended as the minimal standard of practice for injury prevention in youth basketball.

While basketball is paused right now, you have an awesome opportunity to learn this warm-up and share it with your teammates!

If you are dealing with a knee or ankle injury and want to review your training program, we are happy to help!

I was asked over the weekend about what advice I would give coaches and athletes about getting strong…fast!
These were the ones that came to mind the quickest because I use these more than most!

In the private sector, I don’t have the luxury of time. It’s about getting results and getting them quick!!

But, the trick is to maintain the integrity of the athlete (remember that!)
