🪾Willow wreath and floristry workshop with Alexander and Leasha 🪾

Join us this December for a festive wreath making workshop. Alexander will bring freshly harvested basketry willow from the Strangford Lough shoreline and, guided by them, Stage 1 you will make from scratch your natural, traditional willow wreath. Stage 2, Leasha will then guide you through the process of adorning your wreath with locally foraged plants and hand-made decorations. Resist 'landfill-core' this festive season!

🗓 Monday 7th December, 3pm - 7pm
🎟 £60 (materials included)

Introducing this slung worn bottle basket and the upcoming classes to make it kindly hosted by @theamericanbarsailortown. Link to sign up for email invite is in my bio.

Fits a range of bottles as well as space inside for odds and ends. Designed as a way to bring heritage into daily life, as traditional crafts are for all of us.

Go raibh mile maith agaibh a @billybillywoods for these lush photos and to @ykmk_ and @beetjuice555 for making me grin so much as they modelled them round our city. A big thanks, too, to @katybremerbasketry for inspiring to make bottle baskets and answering my maker-questions.

For this post, I wanted to try something a little different.

The wider story surrounding Alexander Edward’s work required more context and research than I felt a few isolated quotes could carry. His work through @basketcasebelfast is not only about the finished objects he creates, but about caring for the land, growing and harvesting his own willow, protecting the knowledge held within basketry and asking how an ancient craft can remain useful and relevant today.

Hopefully, these images reflect more of that story and communicate just how important Alexander’s relationship with the land and the material really is. From tending his plot beside Strangford Lough to experimenting with discarded tyre rubber through his Baskets of the Apocalypse, his work brings heritage, environmental responsibility and creative disruption together in a way he has aptly described as “punk basketry”.

I hope to carry this approach forward more often through Go Leor, using these posts to provide a little more context around the people featured and to highlight those doing such important work - often quietly, and without the wider recognition they deserve.

Thank you so much to Alexander for sharing his time, knowledge and story with me.

You can read the full interview through the link in bio.

Some pics from the Eco Team in @boom.studios very first Eco Takeover Exhibition and event!

Holding an event to showcase environmentally conscious artwork and practices was something I wanted to do ever since I launched the team in January- to engage with artists and members of the public alike. I’m SO proud of the amazing team we’ve built, all the work that has been put in by everyone and how far we’ve come already. The takeover was designed to highlight and celebrate creativity and sustainability as part of the monthly Late Night Art Bangor, and featured a curated exhibition of artwork, displays, information stalls, eco-friendly wares for sale, demonstrations, drop in workshops, poetry reading and live music.

We hosted stalls from different environmental and arts organisations, sellers with eco-friendly wares, including artwork made from construction waste, upcycled clothing, recycled textile waste and natural cleaning products. As well as poetry, live entertainment included musician @gottsakt outside welcoming guests, a free music making workshop using recycled objects, chicken wire sculpting and willow basket making demos. Plus our Environment Minister Andrew Muir popped in for a visit.

There was a real buzz about the place, with lots of great conversations happening, it was amazing to see it so well attended. With beautiful artwork from 21 artists, 14 fabulous stalls and plenty of inspiring chats, the night was a huge success! Huge thank you to the rest of the Eco team, all our participants and to all our lovely visitors! 💚

🌿 Excited to welcome Alexander from @basketcasebelfast to our demonstration area this year!

Alexander is a willow grower and weaver based in Belfast, growing the majority of his own willow right on the Strangford Lough shoreline. Come along and watch him demonstrate traditional willow weaving techniques, from baskets to sustainable garden pieces, all crafted from willow he's grown, harvested, and woven by hand.

It's a brilliant chance to see a centuries-old craft in action and learn how a coastal willow coppice becomes beautiful, practical everyday items. 🧺
