Gotham General Is A New Side Of DC Comics Heroism

What’s made DC’s Batman: Bad Seeds crossover event as phenomenal as it is so far is how focal a character Gotham is, along with all those inhabiting it who rarely appear in more than a supporting role, or who wouldn’t have even been addressed at all, if it wasn’t for tie-in spin-offs. For instance, Batman issue 13 carved out the time for an amusing conversation between Batman and a random Gotham resident whom he rescued from the bloom.

But this event is not only featuring DC superheroes as its leads. GCPD officers like Jim Gordon are the protagonists in the two-part spin-off Batman: Bad Seeds - Gotham Central, and Gotham General’s hospital staff, such as Dr. Ava Dastur, are slated to be the protagonists in the two-part spin-off Batman: Bad Seeds - Gotham General. The solicitation for Batman: Bad Seeds - Gotham General issue 1 reads as follows:

Welcome to General, Gotham City’s tier one trauma center.

Power is out, fires are burning, transpo is shot, and the calls just keep coming. There are more patients than beds, half presenting with respiratory complications, the other half suffering hallucinogenic psychotic episodes. In every other emergency department in the DCU, this would be a catastrophe.

For Dr. Ava Dastur and the men and women working at General, it’s a Tuesday.

DC Comics is pleased to introduce you to the staff of Gotham General. No capes, no costumes, and don’t call them heroes— this is their job.

Batman Still Has Yet to Face One of His Greatest Villains

In 1996’s Kingdom Come issue 2, written by Mark Waid and painted by Alex Ross, Batman has grown old, but lost none of his edge. Now unable to physically be Batman, he has turned Gotham’s safety over to a corp of robots that patrol the streets. Batman’s actions during this time are questionable, but a newly-returned Superman tries to brush them aside. Superman needs his old ally’s help in inspiring a new generation of heroes.

During their exchange, Superman lets slip a tantalizing bit of information. He tells Bruce that “someone told [him] that [Batman’s] nights became free once Genosyde blew up Arkham Asylum and everyone in it.” Batman then finishes the statement, revealing Genosyde did the same to Blackgate and Belle Reve, two other notorious prisons in the DC Universe.

30 Years Ago, DC Teased The One Villain Who Did What Batman Never Could

30 years ago, DC teased the one villain who did what Batman never could. Batman’s rogue’s gallery is one of the best in comics, running the gamut from murderous psychopaths like the Joker to crime bosses such as the Penguin. These villains, who have changed and grown with Batman over the past 87 years, are almost as iconic as The Dark Knight himself.

And while Batman may have some of comics’ best villains, there is no denying they have also committed many atrocities, some on a large scale. How Batman deals with these villains has been a constant source of debate among fans and critics alike. Batman steadfastly refuses to kill, even if it is someone truly hideous like the Joker or Mister Zsasz. These villains, in turn, continually escape from confinement to menace and terrorize the citizens of Gotham City, usually resulting in the loss of more life. Batman takes them down, they go to jail, and the cycle repeats itself.

DC has flirted with more unhinged Batman variants, such as when Azrael replaced Batman in the epic Knightfall saga. However, for the most part, the publisher has kept Batman’s moral code in place, instead leaving the killing to the villains. Even an unintentional death is unacceptable to Batman. Yet, 30 years ago, the publisher teased a villain who was not afraid to get their hands dirty, and DC hid it in one of their biggest stories ever.

Batman: No Man’s Land Is The Perfect Follow-Up To Knightfall

In the 1990s, Batman: Knightfall changed the way readers looked at the Caped Crusader forever. He was suddenly mortal. Gone was the man who could always and forever get out of any trap, win any fight, or outsmart any foe. Now, Batman was vulnerable, and, as an extension of that, so too was Gotham City.

Enter: No Man’s Land. In the wake of a cataclysmic earthquake, Gotham City is cordoned off and isolated from the rest of the world. This leads the criminals of Gotham to run rampant, taking vast territories as their own, and leaving the vigilante heroes to try and restore order. It’s a sprawling epic that pulls no punches, and an animated movie (or multiple movies) adaptation would be truly magnificent to behold.

Batman: The Court of Owls Is The Defining Batman Story Of The Modern Age

Once again brought to life by the unparalleled Scott Snyder, The Court of Owls has, in the 15 years since its initial publication, become a truly essential Batman story. That’s no small feat, especially in regard to a character that has had so many iconic runs and stories over the decades. However, Snyder’s team-up with artist Greg Capullo is truly nothing short of miraculous, and their genre-defining introduction of the Court of Owls is more than worthy of an animated adaptation.

The Court of Owls are the most intriguing Bat-villains introduced since 2000, and their introductory story in the pages of the New 52’s Batman would make for a truly perfect animated movie. Although The Court of Owlsstoryline was partially adapted in the Batman vs Robin animated film, that movie didn’t come close to even scratching the surface of what a direct adaptation could look like.

Batman: Dark Patterns Is A Recent Hit That Has Already Become Essential

Written by Dan Watters and spectacularly illustrated by Hayden Sherman, Batman: Dark Patterns is a 12-issue miniseries from 2025 that has arguably become the definitive detective story of the last 10 years of Batman’s history. Paying homage to the Caped Crusader’s ‘80s and ‘90s stories, Dark Patterns sees Batman investigating four different crimes that slowly begin to interconnect.

It’s a brilliant exploration of Bruce Wayne as a character, and it features some of the most dazzling artwork in the character’s history. Watters and Sherman understand Batman inherently, and their work on Dark Patterns is ready and waiting for an animated adaptation. New villains, intriguing mysteries, and stupendous layouts and designs all make it a no-brainer for Dark Patterns to eventually join the likes of Knightfall in the animated hall of fame.

Batman: Arkham Asylum Is A Psychological Masterwork

Not to be confused with the utterly iconic Batman: Arkham Asylum videogame, writer Grant Morrison and artist Dave McKean’s Batman: Arkham Asylum, often known as Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, is one of the single most groundbreaking and truly vital Bat-tales of all time.

Featuring the Dark Knight entering the iconic facility that holds his most nefarious villains, Arkham Asylum is a dark, brooding masterclass in impressionistic art, psychological nuance, and deeply troubling thematic content that borders on horror. It’s the kind of comic book that, if done right in animation, could change the way audiences see Batman and his rogues gallery. It’s one of the greatest Batman stories ever written, and it has the chance to be one of his finest animated outings.
