If all the people who are busy conducting voter intimidation and suppression at @officiallewistonme City Hall stopped with that illegal nonsense and instead visited a local sandwich shop, they might be less miserable and see all that our city has to offer 💙

Thank you, Omar El Akkad and Myronn Hardy, for an evening that spanned ages, languages, worlds, and a long overdue awakening. Hardy, an incredible author across genres who recently added a Guggenheim to his accolades, has been a friend and inspiration to me on and off the page. His Bates students and friends are fortunate for his devotion. El Akkad has two award-winning novels and, as a journalist, has covered the war in Afghanistan, military trials at Guantànamo Bay, the Arab Spring in Egypt, and BLM in Missouri. His first nonfiction book, One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This has already won the National Book Award. There was so much to speak to, El Akkad never got to read from his book. It would be easy to construe this book as of the Middle East, Gaza, Palestine, and Israel, but El Akkad said, “This is a book about here, about the west,” and how we, with our tax dollars, are doing this. How do we take responsibility and face complicity? His truth telling and even his approach towards harder truths has granted him awards, but at a steep price: lawsuits, threats, and protests upon the book’s release. Cops showed up, and he received hate mail “like you wouldn’t believe.” He was sequestered going through US Customs securities when pro-Palestine folks were disappearing and the immigration lawyer told him, “the thing that’s gonna help you the most is that you sound like one of us.” It was hard and equally important to hear his story. Now. And Here: in Lewiston, Maine, not far from Biddeford where Johan Guerrero was murdered by ICE. We trade globally, travel globally, and live on a globe of us. Guerrero was one of us. So was the ICE who pulled the trigger. Our censors and government, and our loved ones silenced and disappeared? Us. Our language twists who is a terrorist and guilty first, who is a settler/agent and innocent first. Who is an expat, and who is an illegal immigrant or alien. I’ve lived abroad as an immigrant, working under the table hustling for pesos, doing a U-Turn at the border every 90 days to renew my “travel” Visa. In another world, I am Johan Guerrero or Palestinian. In both worlds, we are us. We all take a stand or we all fall.

Football Game Day Feature: The Brothers Spencer

On October 11th, 2025, @batesfootball safety Major Spencer III made the most emotional interception of his career.

With the Bobcats leading by seven on the road and the Tufts University Jumbos driving late in the fourth quarter, Spencer III picked off a pass that had sailed over the intended receiver’s head. The interception clinched the win for Bates.

His identical twin brother, fellow Bates safety Michael Spencer, pointed to the sky, and Major Spencer III ran to the corner of the end zone to celebrate with his teammates, in tears.

The Spencer twins played the game with heavy hearts. They’d found out the night before their father was in the ICU back home in Texas. He had suffered from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, for the previous four years. And after a fall, he didn’t have long to live.

Major and Michael’s father, David Michael Spencer, was a darn good football player. A defensive back, he played college football at Western New Mexico and McMurry University. Then he played professionally for more than a decade in Germany and met Andrea Jones, who is the mother of their four children. David and Andrea moved to Mansfield, Texas, about 30 miles southwest of Dallas, where they raised the Spencer twins and two older sisters.

It was a football family from day one.

Bates College student Lily Cate Caldwell visited 40+ schools. Her advice: take tours 'with a grain of salt.' Don't let one define your choice.

Immediately after a game, Bates WBB's Alison Montgomery wants to say...less.

Or at least that is the goal every season.

She aims to take 24 hours and watch film of the game fully before sharing her full feedback with her team.

In her place, the players often speak up and take the lead with post-game messaging.

This was just one of the many interesting coaching notes from Coach Montgomery in this week's Live Q&A - for more check out the full recording on our newsletter.
