The Pitt Meets The Boys In New 2-Part Series Coming This October

Exceptional landmarks and set pieces in Gotham City are instrumental aspects of why the worldbuilding in Batman-related DCstories is so rich. Between Arkham Asylum, Blackgate Penitentiary, and the Gotham City Police Department, countless incredible tales are told about the horrors that Gotham residents endure on a daily basis, as well as the heroes who devote their lives to saving others.

Following DC Comics’ A-Day in Infinite Frontier, Arkham Asylum has since been replaced by Arkham Towers, where Dr. Annika Zeller works and treats patients like Joker in Matt Fraction’s ongoing Batman run. However, an iconic location that is hardly ever talked about or featured is finally getting its due in a two-part tie-in miniseries that may make Batman’s exploits look like light work.

Batman: No Man’s Land Is The Perfect Follow-Up To Knightfall

In the 1990s, Batman: Knightfall changed the way readers looked at the Caped Crusader forever. He was suddenly mortal. Gone was the man who could always and forever get out of any trap, win any fight, or outsmart any foe. Now, Batman was vulnerable, and, as an extension of that, so too was Gotham City.

Enter: No Man’s Land. In the wake of a cataclysmic earthquake, Gotham City is cordoned off and isolated from the rest of the world. This leads the criminals of Gotham to run rampant, taking vast territories as their own, and leaving the vigilante heroes to try and restore order. It’s a sprawling epic that pulls no punches, and an animated movie (or multiple movies) adaptation would be truly magnificent to behold.

Batman: Dark Patterns Is A Recent Hit That Has Already Become Essential

Written by Dan Watters and spectacularly illustrated by Hayden Sherman, Batman: Dark Patterns is a 12-issue miniseries from 2025 that has arguably become the definitive detective story of the last 10 years of Batman’s history. Paying homage to the Caped Crusader’s ‘80s and ‘90s stories, Dark Patterns sees Batman investigating four different crimes that slowly begin to interconnect.

It’s a brilliant exploration of Bruce Wayne as a character, and it features some of the most dazzling artwork in the character’s history. Watters and Sherman understand Batman inherently, and their work on Dark Patterns is ready and waiting for an animated adaptation. New villains, intriguing mysteries, and stupendous layouts and designs all make it a no-brainer for Dark Patterns to eventually join the likes of Knightfall in the animated hall of fame.

Batman: Arkham Asylum Is A Psychological Masterwork

Not to be confused with the utterly iconic Batman: Arkham Asylum videogame, writer Grant Morrison and artist Dave McKean’s Batman: Arkham Asylum, often known as Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, is one of the single most groundbreaking and truly vital Bat-tales of all time.

Featuring the Dark Knight entering the iconic facility that holds his most nefarious villains, Arkham Asylum is a dark, brooding masterclass in impressionistic art, psychological nuance, and deeply troubling thematic content that borders on horror. It’s the kind of comic book that, if done right in animation, could change the way audiences see Batman and his rogues gallery. It’s one of the greatest Batman stories ever written, and it has the chance to be one of his finest animated outings.

Batman: The Black Mirror Is A Perfect Modern Detective Story

With Batman: Knightfall’s exploration of the legacy of the Bat-cowl and all that it means to wear it, adapting a classic Batman story that doesn’t feature Bruce Wayne under the mask would be truly perfect. Batman: The Black Mirror, by the iconic creative team of Scott Snyder, Jock, and Francesco Francavilla, sees Dick Grayson donning the cape and cowl in one of the best Batman mysteries of the modern age.

Brutal, mysterious, and often deeply disturbing, The Black Mirror is perfect for an R-rated animated movie. Scott Snyder is one of the hottest names in Batman content right now, so adapting one of his earliest hits with the character would be truly major. Of course, the animated adaptation would hopefully attempt to emulate Francavilla and Jock’s unique styles, and, if it pulled it off, an animated The Black Mirror could be an all-time classic.

Everything We Know About DC’s Upcoming Batman of Two Worlds Project (So Far)
Comic Art Comes from San Diego Comic Con’s Gotham City Panel, Images Provided by Screen Rant

DC fans itching to see Batman and Absolute Batman collide can mark their calendars for September 19, 2026, as this oversized special is set to release. In the gallery above, Dark Knight fans can get a first look at the main cover for Batman of Two Worlds, along with what appears to be an interior page. The stunning cover is a collaboration betweenBatman’s ongoing lead artist, Jorge Jiménez, and Absolute Batman’s lead artist, Nick Dragotta.

While DC is still being tight-lipped about what fans can expect from the title, Fraction and Snyder did specifically bring up the age difference between Batman and Absolute Batman, with the latter being just 24 years old and the former in his 40s. Given the emphasis placed on this contrast, it will likely be one of the biggest ways the two Dark Knights differ, particularly in terms of maturity and experience.
Snyder even went on to explain that, at 24, Absolute Batman is still learning and isn’t yet a fully formed adult. As a result, this should make for a particularly interesting dynamic between the two heroes. It will be fascinating to see what Batman and Absolute Batmanultimately learn from each other.

Absolute Batman Can Do Batman Beyond’s Big Twist Way Better Than The DCAU

The idea that Absolute Batman would revive Batman Beyond’s biggest and most controversial twist is crazy to think about, but fortunately, it would be so much better than in the DC Animated Universe. While the original twist was mitigated both by Waller not doing anything beyond making Terry Bruce’s son and by the reassurance that the circumstances of Terry’s birth didn’t stop him from being his own person, many people still felt that it added nothing to the story and made many parts of Batman Beyond worse in hindsight, and framing it as a good thing only enforced that idea to many fans.
Conversely, not only can Absolute Batmanmake the idea of Bruce being manipulated into becoming Batman far less convoluted, but it has no reason to frame the twist as anything other than something horrible for Bruce to overcome, which is something fans have wanted from Batman Beyond for over 20 years now. Add in how there would actually be time to properly explore the ramifications of Project: Batman, and this is nothing but a good thing for Absolute Batman.

With how much stock Absolute Batman puts in deconstructing the Batman mythos, it’s probably the best story for modernizing such a controversial twist as the one from Batman Beyond, so as much as people might hate it, it would be surprisingly great for this to be the direction Absolute Batman heads in, and hopefully, upcoming issues will make that more apparent.

How Absolute Batman Is Modernizing Batman Beyond’s Biggest Twist

In Absolute Batman #19, following Martha’s disappearance and things in Gotham escalating further than ever, Gordon did some digging into things and uncovered a startling truth about everything that had been happening in Gotham. The readers are never told what Gordon uncovered because Scarecrow filled him with crippling paranoia to the point that he jumped off a roof to his death, but Gordon gave Bruce a file titled “Project: Batman”, and a page directly referenced Bruce’s incident at the zoo.

With a mysterious project called Project: Batman, and said project covering details of Bruce’s life, there’s definite symmetry with Project Batman Beyond, where Amanda Waller planned on controlling every facet of Terry’s life to mold him into the next Batman. All of that has to be intentional with how much blatant overlap there is, so surprisingly, it seems like Absolute Batman is planning to reveal that everything in Bruce’s life, including his father’s death, was engineered to make him become Batman.

It’s unknown how something like that could even be possible, but there are already two plausible ideas: the Court of Owls could have set things up for Bruce to become Batman, especially since Martha is a member in this universe; if not them, then the Absolute Universe’s Joker might also be responsible, as issue #15 established that he often backs opposing sides in conflicts for maximum profit. All of that is hypothetical, of course, but if this really is the direction Absolute Batman is going in, then it would be surprisingly easy to explain.
