Ages ago now, I was very surprised to win a competition run by a lovely, ethically run small business called Batik Boutik.There was a bit of a mix up with the dress I chose but yesterday it finally arrived and I'm absolutely in love. Handmade in Ghana and fully transparent about their business practices, I love what they have going on and wanted to share (if there's anyone else out there who loves bright and colourful prints and dyes). In a cold, dark January working on getting my health back, this has given me a much needed boost 🧡

I’m always grateful when someone is able to capture me, truly in my element. Here I am, out and about in the city, trying on clothes that bring me joy, meeting designer pals in real like for the first time. Ro at my side, blowing bubbles, bringing vibes. These are the moments that sustain me and I’m glad when they’re captured ❤️❤️ It was lovely to finally meet Maya of @batikboutikclothing for the first time. The brand was in town for the weekend and I’m glad Oss Fest properly connected us! I could have tried on several things, but here are two items that I got to wear, both of which were lovely. Their 2X fits me well and could definitely work for those who wear up to a size 22 or so. They’ll always be one of my faves! 🫶🏻

Student shout-out 📢 Maya Amoah (Major Journalism, Double Minor Political Science and Human Rights). In her last semester, Maya has explored several avenues in journalism while in the department. She completed an internship at CBC Montreal, The Breach and wrote for travel blogs about her experience as a backpacker traveling across Europe. However, Maya says her primary passion and strengths are magazine writing, interviewing, radio journalism and documentary filmmaking. She is the recipient of the 2022 Emerging Journalist Bursary and has won the Karen Macdonald Award in Journalism, the Nick Auf der Maur Scholarship, the Ange Aimee Woods Bursary and the Global News Scholar. Maya also runs a clothing brand called BATIK BOUTIK, which she started in 2017. Her clothing brand celebrates fashion and art in Ghana, and after spending nine months in Ghana recently, Maya says working on her clothing brand and connecting with family is what resonates most with her. During her recent trip to Ghana, Maya spent time documenting some of Ghana's arts sector and capturing the processes of different traditional artisanal methods on film, such as batik dyeing, leather working and bead-making. “The trip has given me a lot to think about. I imagine Africa will always be woven into my future career in journalism and most likely art and fashion too,” Maya says. As such, Maya is using the skills she learnt in the department to help grow her brand through social media, video, photo, interviews and, potentially an upcoming podcast and online magazine. With her love for fashion and writing, she wants to continue to use her brand to uplift African voices, particularly in the arts sector. “As a journalist, I want my stories to help advance our progression as a society through education of the challenges faced by women, especially minorities and women of color around the world; whether this is in the workplace, on the street or within our own government bodies,” she says.
