Food is... Care. ❤️

Sometimes caring for someone is as simple as making sure they’re fed.

For Hibist Legesse, owner of Bati Ethiopian Kitchen, that lesson started with the enormous gurshas her grandmother fed her as a child in Addis Ababa. Years later, she came to understand just how much love can be communicated in a single bite.

Over a shared Ethiopian platter, Hibist reflects on the traditions she carried with her to New York—and how food can be a way to care for one another, build community, and make someone feel at home.

And yes, she fed me a gursha, too. ❤️

Pull Up a Chair 🍽️

Some interviews feel like interviews. And then there are the conversations where you look up and realize you’ve completely lost track of time.

These are three of those for me.

With Mirta, I found a kindred spirit and a shared love of hosting creative dinner parties. With Shandra, lunch turned into hours of conversation at her home—and eventually, a friendship. And with Hibist, we were laughing almost immediately before sharing the intimacy of gursha around a platter of Ethiopian food.

Three very different stories, but three conversations where it felt a little less like I was interviewing someone and a little more like I was sitting down with a friend.

Every guest who joins Our New York Table answers the same question:

Food is...

The answers are funny, heartfelt, unexpected, and deeply personal. Together, they remind me that food is never just what’s on the plate — it’s how we care for one another, celebrate, remember, and connect.

As we get ready for Season 3 this fall, I wanted to look back at some of my favorite responses from the first two seasons.

So now it’s your turn...

Food is ______.

Finish the sentence in the comments. 🍽️

🌎 Final Stop: The Caribbean, Latin America & Africa!

And just like that, we’ve reached the final stop of my Travel the World Through Food series.

Over the past four episodes, we’ve explored incredible cuisines from around the world, all throughout the @fabfulton district in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill—proving you don’t need a passport to experience global flavors right here in Brooklyn.

✨ I hope this series inspires you to get out, explore the FAB Fulton district, support these amazing local businesses, and discover a new favorite along the way.

If you could only choose ONE stop from this entire series, where are you going first? 👇🌍
