Identity Crisis issue Number: #6

This heartbreaking moment occurs during the murder mystery event Identity Crisis, written by Brad Meltzer with art by Rags Morales.

In the story, a killer targets the loved ones of the Justice League. Digger Harkness, the original Captain Boomerang, is hired as an assassin and sent to kill Jack Drake (the father of the third Robin, Tim Drake). When Boomerang breaks into his home, Jack manages to shoot and kill him, but not before Boomerang throws a razor-sharp golden boomerang that fatally pierces Jack's chest.

Tim rushes home after sensing the danger, arriving moments too late. He finds his father dead on the floor alongside his killer. Batman arrives to comfort a devastated, weeping Tim, holding him tightly as the narration delivers one of the most poignant, crushing lines in DC history: "Batman and Robin. Orphans."

Batman "Knightfall" saga #497 (publishedJuly 1993)

This panel depicts one of the most iconic and paradigm-shifting moments in modern comic book history: "The Breaking of the Bat." In the sprawling 1993 Knightfall storyline, the supervillain Bane orchestrates a massive breakout at Arkham Asylum, releasing all of Batman's most dangerous foes at once. His master plan is to systematically wear Bruce Wayne down physically and psychologically by forcing him to recapture every single criminal without a moment to rest. By the time a completely exhausted, battered, and sleep-deprived Batman returns to the Batcave, Bane is waiting for him in the shadows. Incapable of matching Bane's raw, Venom-fueled strength in his current state, Bruce is easily overpowered. The fight culminates in this exact panel where Bane hovers over him, declares "I BREAK YOU", and shatters Batman's spine over his knee. Leaving Bruce Wayne paralyzed on the floor of his own home, Bane takes over the criminal underworld of Gotham City.

This forced a reluctant temporary retirement for Bruce and led to a darker era where a more ruthless vigilante named Jean-Paul Valley (Azrael) took up the mantle of Batman, ultimately proving that Bruce was irreplaceable and setting up his eventual triumphant return.

Still going through my comics boxes…some beauts in this one.

Here is a striking one - Detective Comics 415. Cover date of September 1970 but in fact released in July of that year (hence the T-Rex track).

Quintessential Bronze Age cover by Neal Adams. Interior art by Bob Brown and Dick Giordano. Written by another legend in Frank Robbins.

A bit of Sunday night comic reminiscing.

Not an especially rare or expensive comic but maybe it should be! DC’s The Brave and the Bold from October 1982 with cover and interior art by the one and only Jim Aparo.

One of the last Brave and the Bold comics to be released before it was replaced by Batman & The Outsiders. It had been running since 1955.

The Joker is framed for the ‘killing’ of the Penguin. But was it all a felonious plot by one or both of the Super Villains? Batman and The Joker team up to investigate!

Loved this story as a kid although I read it initially in the UK reprinted, larger sized, edition (which I still have). This US version was a Carboot find from 2-3 years ago.

To see the Joker and the Penguin facing off was always exciting. To me they are and always will be the number 1 and number 2 villains in DC. Possibly in all of comics.
