๐ŸŸฉโš”๏ธ A Race of Service โ€” Courage, Charity, and the Green Cross

In the quiet shade of Savannahโ€™s oaks, the 8th Annual HonorMark 5K became more than a community runโ€”it became a testament to service, sacrifice, and the power of standing together for those in need.

Created in memory of Marine veteran and firefighter Mark Hummeldorf, HonorMark raises funds each year for the families of first responders and military veterans facing difficult hardships.
Among this yearโ€™s beneficiaries is the Cummins family, whose young son has battled a brain tumor since he was only 18 months old. Three brain surgeries, countless treatments, and unshakable faith have shaped his journey. His storyโ€”and the quiet strength of his familyโ€”became one of the beating hearts of this yearโ€™s race.

This year, the Order of Saint Lazarus joined HonorMark as a Title Sponsor, bringing its centuries-old mission of service into the modern world. And on that starting line, the Orderโ€™s commitment was lived out in real time.

Officer Brian Harlow, OLJ, MMLJโ€”a combat veteran who lost his leg overseasโ€”ran the course as a symbol of resilience and purpose. After surviving his injury and rebuilding his life through months of painful recovery, returning to the 5K became part of his mission to give back. His connection with HonorMark helped bring the Order into partnership with the foundation, uniting two communities devoted to service.

He was joined by Grand Prior John Byrnes, GCLJ, GCMLJ, and Dame Anna Loskutova-Byrnes, DCLJโ€”members of the Order who laced up not just to run, but to stand as witnesses of faith, charity, and chivalry in action.

Through every mile, their steps carried stories:
stories of veterans healing, families fighting battles unseen, and communities choosing compassion over indifference.

The Green Cross was presentโ€”not as a symbol of the past, but as a living reminder that service continues, that charity still moves hearts, and that courage can rise again where suffering once stood.
