Check Before You Boycott

Bayside Lounge, a Vancouver bar since 1979, is closing at the end of the month. Social media quickly blamed its neighbour, Lucky Sushi Co., for supposedly outbidding Bayside and taking over the space.

Lucky Sushi says it isn’t moving in, Daily Hive confirmed the space will stay a bar and lounge, and the restaurant says its staff now feel unsafe after a wave of threats and taunting reviews.

A rumour nobody checked landed on a small business that had nothing to do with it.

Here’s the real estate side people miss. When a long-time commercial tenant leaves, the decision usually comes down to the tenant and the landlord: renewal terms, rent, timing, or the owner’s plans for the building.

The business next door almost never has a say. If you own or run a small business, start talking about your renewal options well before the lease runs out, because surprises can cost you.

And if you’re a customer who loves a local spot, the best thing you can do is keep showing up, not go after the neighbours.

Last call for some Disco/House heaters Friday nite from 10pm-3am. Get your fill before it’s gone!

Please join us this Thanksgiving Sunday night as we celebrate our last long weekend at the bayside. I can't tell you how much I love this place with every bit of my heart; what it has meant to the community, and what it represents as a melting pot to all that live in the neighborhood and understand the resonance of it has with its patrons. So let's come together and celebrate this Thanksgiving in proper fashion! I just want to say thank you to @joe_pound for the opportunity to be part of the team and DJ the @redbullcanada Rotation night.

A big shoutout to @jmegrl and the entire staff for being so welcoming, and to all the customers who showed love and support on the dance floor ❤️

Even though it’s only been a few months, I’ve made some great memories, and I’m genuinely going to miss this place, amazing people and the atmosphere.

If you’re around tonight, come through and let’s make it one to remember! 🔥🎶

Truly devastated that Bayside Lounge is closing down after so many years of being an icon of Vancouver’s nightlife and bar scene. I am honoured to be among the few who will grace the decks at Bayside during their last month of operations. Come on down to help me bid them farewell and send them off with a bang! 🌶️

😢 The West End is losing its retro English Bay cocktail lounge after 47 YEARS

@baysidelounge announced on Instagram on October 7 that it will close at the end of the month.

“It honestly doesn’t feel real,” the team wrote. The post doesn’t say exactly why it is shutting down.

The lounge first opened in the same upstairs space above Denman and Davie in 1979, according to the West End Journal.

It still leans into its 1970s look, with a sunken circular bar and windows that look straight out over English Bay.

Back in the day, every table even had its own telephone so guests could call other tables.

Sunset tables have limited availability, so book ahead for weekends if you want one last drink with the view.

After 47 years, Bayside Lounge in the West End has announced it will close at the end of the month.

Known for its cocktails and sweeping English Bay views, the lounge first opened in 1979 and is inviting longtime regulars and newcomers alike to stop by one last time before its final night.
