Happy 20th anniversary to Costello Music!!! 🎉

For the anniversary, I thought I’d share a little about how we made it:

The Fratellis and I spent 18 days at @sunsetsoundrecorders Studio 3 recording the 16 songs that would become Costello Music.

A couple days before we rehearsed in an LA rehearsal room and I immediately noticed this incredible energy when the three of them played together. I felt if we can capture THAT, we might have something really special.

So we recorded the songs live focusing on getting vibrant takes of drums, bass and guitar happening together. We’d spend most of the day getting sounds dialed in, usually hit record around 4pm and then aim to finish one song a day.

The next morning, Jon would come in looking pretty bleary eyed, drink a couple cups of Sunset Sound’s legendary drip coffee, warm up on acoustic for about 30 mins… and then suddenly BOOM… straight into character.

At around 10:30am he’d be throwing down these completely wild, enthusiastic vocal takes… a complete wild man. 😂

Most songs he nailed in the first take. If we went beyond three it was usually just to try alternate ideas. Then we’d do doubles/harmonies, grab lunch and then spend the next several hours getting sounds for the next song.

We had guitars, amps and pedals EVERYWHERE. Jon’s Tele through a Vox AC30 + Fender Twin was one of my favorite combinations. The two amps blended into this thick, bright sound that really suited the record and his playing.

Baz played my ‘62 P-Bass reissue on most of the album through an Ampeg B-15R… an amp I still use probably 98% of the time to this day. He also played a Schecter Tempest with flats on a few songs.

Mince played a late-‘60s/early-‘70s Ludwig kit switching between a Black Beauty and Supraphonic snare depending on what we were going for.

For mixing, I initially moved into Studio 1 and promptly had a mild freak-out because I couldn’t get things sounding the way I wanted.
