I always try to be really positive about the accessibility of places I visit, and the @cotswoldwildlifepark did get so many things right. But there is a huge issue with their ticket pricing. ❌⬇️

If you are blind - you get in FREE ✅
If you are visiting with a group of other disabled people your carers get in FREE ✅

So the park recognises that for disabled people admission charge adaptations are there to help make things more equal.

But as an independent disabled person visiting and needing my carers with me - there were NO price concessions - and I had to pay for THREE full price tickets 😡🤯😖

So why does the park recognise certain disabilities and groups over another? Thats unfair for everyone.

I’ll be following this up with the Park and I’ll let you all know their response - or maybe i’ll get a response on here?

Such a shame for such a great place. 😢

Weeks of campaigning. Days of interviews. Hours of meetings. 3 national radio stations. 2 CEOs. 1 message:

Disabled Freedom.

On 1st March in Great Britain (1st September in Northern Ireland), Motability introduced the DriveSmart scheme which had a wide variety of unintended consequences. Today, after much work, the rollout of DriveSmart will be paused with immediate effect.

I commend the leadership at Motability for listening to the concerns raised about DriveSmart, recognising the seriousness of the issues for disabled people’s lives — particularly around independence and safeguarding — and acting swiftly to address them.

Given that my biggest concerns about this policy were around safeguarding, it’s not appropriate to go into detail on the issues with DriveSmart (especially now it has been paused).

So, instead, I will make two broader points.

First, to the disabled community. To those of you who: researched with me, researched for me, educated me, challenged me, supported me, listened to me, defended me, protected me and, above all, trusted me - I salute you. You are all testaments to our community. A particular shout out to all the people who reached out with how these changes impacted them personally- I know how scared people were so I thank you again for trusting me.

Next, to the non-disabled community, my message is this. There are two types of people: disabled people and pre-disabled people. The inevitability of disability within the human experience is non-negotiable. That is normal, that is natural and that is not something to be scared of. What this means is that disability rights affect everybody. Disability rights affect you. So I urge you: don’t wait until you’re in our community to fight for our community.

Today, we celebrate. Tomorrow, we get back to work.

Change doesn’t happen until we make it.

Long Live Disabled Freedom.

Perception vs my identity. Or all of it at the same time?

Text reads. Society, blind woman. Me, I’m a blind mum. My daughter, that’s just my mum.

Audio description. Video shows me, Sylvia along with my daughter. I am a black woman who is blind, wearing mou-mou. Before me is some green grassy hillside with the sea visible at one corner. What a view! I have long blonde braids and no shoes on. My daughter, a young black girl in a sun dress and braids held in a bun follows me. As I stop towards the edge of the lawn, she walks up beside me, I say something to her which she responds to, then she puts her arm around my waist as I put mine on her shoulder, as we “look” on. I’ll be honest I couldn’t see much, but loved that she was enjoying some time with me and looking at the world around us.

To the world, I might be a blind woman. To myself, I am a mum first, and I am blind or vice versa depending on the type of day it has been. To her, I’m just mum. The one who gives her cuddles, the one who does her braids how she likes them. The one who reads stories with her. The one who gets her ready for school. The one who lets her explore endless “what ifs” with enthusiasm, and listens each time. Although she knows that I am blind , and will do endless accessibility assessments and quests for me - blind isn’t what she sees.

How do you think of yourself vs how people see you?

PS: On accessibility quests, she custom made me a tactile laptop sticker and put it right where the opening tab is - no more fiddling about. She also has shown me countless accessible features on things, which I will share soon! This is what we mean when we say, teach them inclusive design early, and it will be built in and not bolted on. They’re our future ❤️

Zahid @deafakhi, 18, was born deaf and uses a cochlear implant. He recently joined a group of British Muslims on a pilgrimage to Mecca.⁣
