Completing a summer filled with song in a Gala Concert at the Usher Hall celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the National Youth Choir of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.

Following a Scottish anniversary tour to Paisley, Aberdeen, and Perth, performing newly commissioned Jay Capperauld’s ‘The World’, Jonathan Dove’s ‘The Passing of the Year’ & Carl Orff’s ‘Carmina Burana’, the celebrations culminated with a final concert with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, recorded for BBC Radio 3, and attended by the living composers of the programmed works.

Congratulations to NYCOS on all you have achieved in the past three decades. I look forward to seeing all that’s to come! 🩵

The epic end of Rachmaninov’s 2nd concerto 🤩🥰
I know it competes for the title with Rachmaninov’s 3rd concerto and the 2nd symphony – which would you say is the grandest Rachmaninov climax?

Throwback to a wonderful collaboration with the @bbcsso and ludovic_morlot.

Still yearning for more Reich? @bbcsounds has you covered. Our Sunday celebration with the @bbcsso alongside the @colincurrieperc Group is still available to listen to for another 22 days. The Four Sections was even part of BBC Radio 4’s Pick of the Week, high praise indeed.

You can also listen again to The Desert Music and Different Trains with @royal_northern_sinfonia.

Listen via the BBC Sounds app.

Last week I had the absolute pleasure of not only leading workshops, but also presenting my first concert with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra 🎶, alongside the most wonderful young musicians and their teachers from across Argyll and Bute 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

From body percussion challenges 🥁 to 5/4 Holst and offbeat Copland, it was an utter joy to thread the day together and then share all of the incredible work and energy from the day with such a wonderfully grateful audience 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

A huge thank you to @stefanoboccacci and the @bbcsso musicians who not only threw themselves into some challenging activities, but also led groups, shared their musical expertise, and most importantly, had so much fun making music with the young people and their teachers 💖

An inspiring weekend learning from the best! 🎼

RCS student conductors Ammal Bhatia, Claudia Jablonski, Joshua Franken and Bugra Yuzuguldu, alongside our Leverhulme Conducting Fellow, Stefano Boccacci, had the opportunity to work with and learn from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra’s Chief Conductor Designate, Antony Hermus.

A huge thank you to Antony for leading a fantastic weekend of workshops, sharing his expertise and insight with students from across the School of Music. ✨

Love of Life (biophilia) at Fringe by the Sea 2026 ✨

A celebration of our connection to nature, place and one another.

🧡 We revealed 'Sula bassana' - a symphonic meditation by composer Erland Cooper. Inspired by North Berwick, the Firth of Forth and the landscapes that surround us. Recorded by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the piece was accompanied by a stunning film made by Lewis Gourlay.

The world premiere of 'Sula bassana' takes place on November 26th as part of Erland Cooper's Dawn Chorus & Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending, at Glasgow City Halls for the BBC SSO 2026-27 Season.

🪹 Did you pause at The Nest? This was artist Naomi McIntosh’s immersive sonic sculpture which captured 'Sula bassana', suspending it in a tranquil sycamore grove within the Festival Hub. Old School Fabrications on production and build.

🩵 The Flock came together - a joyful parade of handmade gannets, crafted with Vision Mechanics, gathering at the Harbour on the opening day of FBTS 2026 with Haver Quartet offering a hint of the soundtrack.

🌱 Thousands of you explored nature's music and biosonification through a special Plants Can Dance installation and workshops with Brian d'Souza and Lamine Toure.

What a way to wrap up our weekend of celebrations 🎶

On our final day, we were joined by Bryce Dessner and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra to bring even more of Steve Reich’s incredible work to life, from the emotive, poignant Different Trains to the organised chaos of The Four Sections, brilliantly performed by the BBC SSO. Our installation, Phase Pattern Pulse, continued to immerse audiences in Reich’s sounds.

Missed any of it? Rewatch our livestream of Music for 18 Musicians on YouTube, or head to BBC Sounds for coverage from the whole weekend 📻
