Arthur Fellig 'Weegee' one of my all time favorite photographer's and an inspiration, I've studied his work intensely, check out his work if you are not familiar, a pioneer of street photography and social documentary, he was ahead of his time IMO. He worked as a press photographer in 30's & 40's NYC, and would develop his prints in the boot of his car, under street lights (which was safe light) to get his work in before anyone else, he would often turn up at crime scenes before the crime happened! He knew all the local gangsters and the local Cops, and was allowed to have a police radio in his car. There's a film, docu/drama based on him, forget the name of it, Joe Pesci plays Weegee. He later did some work in Hollywood, experimenting with home made plastic lenses to create caricature style images of people, like Marilyn Munroe etc, he also worked on the special effects for the film 'Dr Strangelove' pre digital. Weegee arrived in NYC in 1909 from what is now Ukraine.

Before Weegee, Jacob Riis documented the squalor of the densely populated lower East side, he was more of an activist, campaigner but used photography to help his cause, having experienced poverty himself living in the 'Five points' one of his iconic images was taken in 1888 Mulberry St called 'Bandits roost' Riis moved to NYC from Denmark. Theodore Roosevelt was impressed by his work and introduced himself, the two became life long friends. I love social history, as you might have guessed.
