Fishwife CEO Becca Millstein says habit is one of a founder’s best tools 🐟📈 As Fishwife has grown, Millstein says one of her biggest challenges has been learning what to delegate while staying close to the work she actually loves doing. 🏃 Runs about eight miles a day to think 🗓️ Relies on structured meetings 🤖 Uses AI for note-taking 🧠 Keeps routines simple to stay focused 🐟 Still stays hands-on as Fishwife scales Her approach: give up the work that no longer needs you so you can stay focused on what matters most. What habit helps you stay productive? Source: Business Insider

A skincare brand and a tinned fish brand made eye masks together, and I’m into it 🐟 I shared my thoughts with @insideretail on the @dieuxskin x @fishwife collaboration. The pairing looks surprising on paper, but I can easily imagine the same person buying Dieux for their bathroom shelf and Fishwife for their pantry. People don’t sort their tastes by retail category, and the best brand collaborations understand that. The details make this one work for me, too. Fishwife’s longtime illustrator brought its visual world to Dieux’s reusable eye masks, giving the product a reason to exist beyond the initial “wait, what?” moment. Thank you to Nicole Kirichanskaya for including my perspective. Read the full piece at the link in bio!

The smartest brand move of the last decade happened in a category nobody wanted to touch: canned fish. Most founders look for a “sexy” space. The real opportunity is almost always in the one everyone’s avoiding. Turn the liability into the identity. Commission artists. Make it a collector’s item. Watch it migrate from the back of the cupboard to the front of a mood board. Stigma isn’t a wall. For the right brand, it’s a launchpad! We’re Sachee & Himanshu (@bestbhallaintown) - co-founders of @thatsassythingdotcom, a wellness brand for women we’ve been building since 2021. In our journey of studying and building some of the coolest brands since 2012, we’ve been obsessed with what makes certain brands earn cult status while others just sell products. We didn’t want to gatekeep. And we’re breaking down the strategies behind the brands, so you don’t have to. This series is for anyone who’s looking for inspiration and wants to build something iconic. Follow along. Save this. Share it with someone building a brand. Fishwife didn’t invent canned fish. They just changed the way we perceive it! Obviously the packaging played a huge part, but then the timing got suspiciously good too: tinned fish had its viral moment, sardines became Gen Z symbol and protein became everyone’s entire personality. A  great reminder that an ordinary product can become an extraordinary business when you change how people see it. Follow for more businesses that make us think… wait, we could do this too 👀 #businessideas #entrepreneurlife #branding #founder #branddesign

There was no premium tinned fish shelf in the US when Fishwife started. Not a small one. It did not exist. Becca Millstein and Caroline Goldfarb founded it in Los Angeles in December 2020. Creating a category means your first competitor is indifference. It is a shopper who has never once considered the occasion you are selling. That job is slower and far more expensive than taking share from a rival. The tell is the build order. Millstein locked sustainable fisheries and canneries across four countries before the brand had real demand. Most founders sign one co-packer and chase speed instead. Here is the risk nobody flags. You spend years teaching an occasion, and fast-followers sell into the demand you paid to create. Competitors copy positioning and packaging in a season. A sourcing network built across four countries takes far longer to reproduce. So the moat was never the fish. It was owning the supply the day the shelf she built started to fill.
