I vividly remember looking in my closet a few years back, seeing that big green letter L on that bright green shit and getting angry.

“The fuck would I buy the shirt of a fucking side character? That isn’t me. How could I ever relate to this?”

I felt a sense of shame and disconnect with who I pretended to be in the past vs who deep down I knew I really was. I wondered to myself; why was I always drawn to the side character? The anti hero? The deuteragonist?

And why would I prefer Mario’s less brave, less competent, and overly anxious little brother over the main character who saves the day and gets the girl?

In truth, despite loved ones, family and acquaintances seeing magnetic qualities in me and encouraging me to put myself out there, I ran from the spotlight. This was partially due to fearing the responsibility that came with being visible.

But most of all? I feared the idea that embracing the spotlight would make my friends, family, and even strangers resent me. I didn’t want the pressure of being scrutinized, called arrogant, being envied, or hated. Nobody hates or envies the side character, so I was safe.

In my own way, I was a Luigi, and knowing that truth ate at me as I saw that shirt again.

But as I grew in my confidence and reassessed, I realized something – the true me, the me who embraced my ego still liked Luigi a lot more than Mario, and if I got out of my feelings long enough, it was easy to see why he is so loved and arguably the heart of the whole Mushroom Kingdom crew.

Luigi teaches kids that it’s okay to fail as long as you never give up. He teaches kids that you can still be brave while being terrified. And he teaches kids that you don’t have to be perfect to be worthy or loved by your family and friends. He’s also green and that’s a much better color than red LOL.

I feel a lot different wearing that shirt these days. At peace with where I always belonged – no matter the letter on my chest.

Happy to announce that Mario Appreciation Month has been extended until…I finish it. LOL, thank you for your patience. And special shout outs to @bboy_genetics for bringing the man in green to life for my content.
