R.I.P GERALD (Rock Force Crew) | 1998 Battle Of The Year.

Rest In Peace Gerald (8. January. 1981 - 30. December. 2012)

Gerald is one of the B-Boys who can never be left out when talking about the history of modern Breaking in the late 1990s. As a central figure in Rock Force Crew, he strongly established his name in the worldwide Breaking scene through Battle of the Year 1998.

Coming from Sacramento, Gerald was already one of the most notable rising stars on the West Coast at the time. Starting with his strong performance at Tribute to the Elements in 1997, he also made his presence known at Best of the Best, and in 1998, he continued his momentum with a victory at the Rock Steady Crew Anniversary, going through one of the brightest periods of his career. At the peak of that momentum was Rock Force Crew’s victory at Battle of the Year 1998. Gerald was one of the key members who led that victory.

His movement was clearly special even at that time. He was already performing Airflare Combos at a high level, and he had a distinctive Stacking Style and a unique way of connecting Powermoves into Freezes that clearly separated him from other B-Boys.

But in 1998, he suffered a serious incident when he was shot in the head during a sudden shooting. His life was in danger, but he miraculously survived and, after a long period of rehabilitation, returned to Breaking.

After that, rather than continuing the same kind of career he had before, he chose to keep teaching kids in his local community and pass on the experience and knowledge he had built to the next generation.

However, due to the lasting effects and complications tha followed the shooting, Gerald passed away in 2012 at the young age of 31.

His life was short, but the mark he left on Breaking was not. His movement that represented an era, the history he created together with Rock Force Crew, and the experience he passed on to the next generation all remain.

I send my deepest respect to the legacy and achievements Gerald left behind.

Rest In Peace, Gerald. I will always remember the movement and history you left behind.

VIETNAM (@bboyvietnam) | 2000 Battle Of The Year Japan.

Vietnam was a major source of inspiration for the breaking scene from the late 1990s through the early 2000s.

He developed his own unique system of movement, particularly through original freezes and techniques performed on the backs of his hands. This approach became known as “Terrorwrist Tactics” and established an entirely new style.

With an unmistakable character and powerful originality that could never be easily imitated, Vietnam’s breaking went beyond technique. He clearly demonstrated what it truly means to have a signature style.
