1 year ago today, @brownricebakery invited me to share my story through food & culture for the PRIDE @gatherdinnerseries — my first official community-facing event. A true baptism by fire but I’ll never forget how the community showed up, not just to eat at a table built with love, but to lift me, hold me, and help create an authentic experience highlighting the essence of my culture.

That same evening, my heart was heavy with grief. While my family gathered back home for my Grandma’s “Nine Night,” I stood there, sharing how a lil country kid first learned what unconditional love looked without words: braiding her hair before church & massaging castor oil into her scalp, making sweet potato pudding over wood fire, and selling at the market… I was surrounded by chosen family & friends, and my vision for Jerkies became even clearer! Truly, no man is an island, and my hope is to keep sharing the power of LOVE as a tool for survival, resistance, and healing, through food.

Now more than ever, with all the noise, hate, and erasure, feeding the mind, body, and soul is revolutionary. Rooted in where I come from and who I come with while giving thanks & honoring the hands & spirits that taught me how to cook — even through I don’t know how long this will last in such uncertain times, I’m already grateful for the journey, learning a lot & building a community I feel truly blessed to have. I’m excited to keep breaking bread with those choosing to center love and liberation for ALL!
