For Frieze London, Foster presents a new body of paintings that moves fluidly between the intimate and the expansive: loosely observed gardens and flowers, arrangements of objects and books, wooded landscapes, Los Angeles neighborhoods, distant mountains, and a solitary bird against an expanse of sea. Rendered in luminous, sometimes unexpected color, the works favor the immediacy of recollection and observation over strict naturalism. Across the presentation, familiar places and everyday subjects become gently transformed through Foster’s distinctive handling of color, scale, and atmosphere, giving the paintings the quality of places both directly experienced and partially remembered.
