August Recap (08/12)

I’m lying here at the end of it, sick as a dog, knowing it was a good one!

Flew home from Europe and got straight back to jumping off the Chief with old friends who came to visit. Search & Rescue callouts, and met some of the new potential SAR recruits. Helped @the.cookie.dror at the PNE and deliver cookies when it didn’t go to plan. Skydiving for fun and for work @whistlerskydive doing tandems & I love it. A Wear White event down in Vancouver. Played rugby for the Fire Dept and we got new vehicles at the Flynn residence.

Somewhere in the last few years, I lost myself. This year I found myself again, cliche AF I know…. The confident paratrooper is back the one who’s self-sufficient, self-reliant, and doesn’t need your approval to sleep at night. I know that rubs some people the wrong way and good; we are different!

One of the lines we had to recite in the Paras was ā€œI ask nothing from those who gave nothingā€

I’ve learned to set boundaries. Relationships are give and take and today’s world needs to learn this, I show up for the people who show up for me, and I’ve stopped pouring into the ones who only take. If there’s silence between us, we both already know why... I’m not angry and when you want to apologize my door will always be open. I won’t defend myself against the stories being told, because the truth has a way of surfacing on its own. When it does, you’ll find me exactly where I’ve always been: moving forward, heart on my sleeve, still heading to the top and taking people with me.

August has always been my hardest month. It carries the anniversary of losing a friend on my first deployment to Afghanistan in 2006. For the first time in 20 years, it didn’t swallow me whole, and I put that down to the work I’ve done this year and last year with EMDR, advanced neurofeedback and TMS therapy. I’ve always said they taught us how to go to war; They never taught us how to come home… but these systems have.

20 years later, I’m home, I’m happy and have a great future

ā€œOut of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scarsā€
