Finally! My first opportunity in 2 years to see @wearemodernliterature was their live return on @thenightowlbham stage. It's a long drive to the Derit End of Birmingham, 3 paracetamol to get there, 3 coffees to safely return, yet proved to be inspirational, incredibly rewarding.

Last time out the new material they showcased (developed during covid) amazed, but that line-up lasted barely one more show. Core members Greggs & Skips may be tasty snacks, adding 3 fine musicians makes the updated band a banquet fit for royalty. Their cheap-list drew a very substantial crowd. Possibly the most exciting new music to emerge in the UK this year, their tightness, dynamics, sound and unmistakable stage presence drew a great response in a fine venue. (I note wonderfully engaging & helpful crew staff the bar, door, box office. The FoH is a pro). Can't wait to see them play again & learn a musically adventurous label (@4ad @onelittleindierecords @toughloverecords spring to mind) had jumped in behind them.

Well regarded opening act @slimecitymusic hail from Glasgow yet government neglect of UK infrastructure, climate & working folk led to closure of all England/Scotland rail routes tonight, coinciding with this wonderful* reggae find. (*80's cover of 60's classic).

Had a record store dilemma too - when your crackly copy has horrid sticker damage to the cover, do you pay £50 for a NM original or £3 for the decent copy with clean gatefold, beautiful lyric insert but one nasty looking mark that leaves half a dozen clicks in the first minute of the instrumental intro track?

The night began brightly, a charmed welcome from superstar DJ, promoter, bringer of rhythm @simondrowner - he was at the decks when "Another Girl.." was spun, I'd brought the book with me!

All rapidly turned to comedy with my arrival on the dancefloor, 4 ladies all stood on my right foot within 15 minutes! Remind me to wear my steel capped work boots next time I venture => West Mids. Not just inside venues, walking both to and from the venue involved passing ambulances responding to emergencies then a multi-vehicle incident gridlocked the main road home <1 mile of setting off.

AUGUST 2023: A month of music festivals and substituting meals for platters (or picky bits as the Brits say), first-time-hosting in our backyard on the last weekend of summer, city bonfires, watching watercolour sunsets, an unexpectedly big night by the river and wishing London could be sunny all the time 🤞🏻

Had lunch with my Grandad watching over me and @chez66club in Bar Bruno in Wardour St Soho yesterday.

Yes that’s my Grandad on the Rowntree’s Fruit Gum box ….honest… he did a bit of acting and modelling as a child! ❤️

MAY 2023: The clouds parted for the sun and we filled three long weekends with Guinness in Dublin, mountains in Wales, guests at the dining table, the first BBQ of the season and my 1-year anniversary in London - not to mention the spontaneous gigs, sweaty gym sessions, pub grub, canal-side brunch, vivid sunsets and every other delight in between 💕

APRIL 2023: A month full of everything under the storm and sun: unexpected hangovers, plus-oneing parties, Sunday rhythms, 10km runs, memorable meals, finally planting my roots, falling headfirst and going 80 miles an hour on country Cotswold roads.

All bars have a purpose- and a noble one at that - but these tasty drinks at @daintree.sydney have a mission beyond the good times and native ingredients: replanting the ancient Daintree rainforest. To the tune of 50 percent of profits. I’ll drink to that, and specifically with a (L-R) Pina Nut, Karkalla Colllins and Gumnut Negroni. 🌿🌱🌳.
