Seagrass is one of the Maldives’ most important underwater habitats.

New research from Laamu Atoll recorded 9,192 fish from 50 species, with many young fish using seagrass as a safe place to grow before moving to coral reefs (link in bio).

The study also found that healthier seagrass supports more fish, highlighting why these underwater meadows deserve protection.

Healthy seagrass helps build healthy fish populations and a healthy ocean. 🌊

Touching grass at Gaadhoo🌴🌳🌿
.
Many areas of L.Gaadhoo are nationally protected areas that have restrictions on what you can and cannot do. These restrictions are to maintain the wildlife ecosystems you can find on land and in the water for this area.

It is not recommended to go there alone. Please contact the Olive Ridley Project rangers for guidance (if you would like to visit).

What looks like a field of underwater flowers is actually a colony of tiny animals called #zoanthids, close relatives of corals and sea anemones. Like corals, they host microscopic symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae, which provide energy through photosynthesis. Their striking colours, however, come from pigments produced by the zoanthids themselves.
