I’ve spent countless hours in the Pine Barrens and have never just run into a timber rattlesnake. I’ve tracked them with telemetry, visited winter dens with biologists, checked on a rookery where the mother was keeping close watch, and even trained to handle them with snake tongs for the NJ Rattlesnake Response Team — but I never got a call to move one from someone’s yard, and have never stumbled across one in my travels.

WELL, yesterday on the drive home from a stunning day of kayaking with my friends Brian and Caitlin, she saw a rattlesnake crossing the busy road in front of her and got out to make sure it safely crossed. I stopped when she flagged me down before I passed her, and she pointed excitedly to where it had slipped perfectly into a log’s long shadow. I couldn’t believe my eyes! I think I hugged her. If I didn’t, I should have. We watched it quietly, then got back in our cars. As I sat there texting Neil (to tell him!!!), the snake decided to cross the sand road (not the busy one!), moving slowly into the huckleberry bushes across the way where its cryptic and disruptive patterning made it absolutely 100% disappear into the dappled sunlight and leaf litter. My gosh! How many times had I stumbled past one, foraying for fungi in the underbrush or searching for special plants. Actually, probably not that many. This is an endangered snake in NJ, and this genetically isolated population in the Pine Barrens is especially so. I feel so grateful to Caitlin and her eagle eyes, and so so lucky to have seen it. (BTW, this video is heavily zoomed. I stayed at least 10 feet away, well outside strike range, didn’t move, and the snake never felt threatened - it took its time and never rattled. In NJ, it’s illegal to harass rattlesnakes, so if you see one, give it space and let it pass, standing back and to the side or behind it so you don’t influence its behavior or direction. I don’t think I even breathed. Not once. 💚🐍 💚🐍💚🐍💚)

The NJ Pine Barrens is so special and ecologically important. It’s a treasure trove of rare species. It’s gorgeous and just the best place to go get lost.

Every year on Christmas Eve day I dress up like Santa and visit families around town. It is so magical and it’s one of my absolute favorite things to do all year. One kid asked for a vending machine!

Summertime Adventures with Gratitude 🌞🚣‍♀️

We had the incredible opportunity to embark on a truly memorable trip, all thanks to the amazing Lauren and Rob who convinced us to take a much-needed break from our busy farming schedules. It turned out to be an absolute dream! 🏞️✨

With a wonderful group of about 21 people, we set out on a 11 mile kayaking journey down the Mullica River, surrounded by breathtaking scenery that made us feel like we were in a scene straight out of Jurassic Park or the thrilling adventures of Huckleberry Finn! 🚣‍♂️🍃

I couldn’t resist sharing my love for sourdough bread, so I baked a loaf and it paddled down the river with us and brought it to our overnight camp location in the woods. It was a delightful addition to our camp feast. Alongside delicious ramen, charcuteries & cheese, blueberry crisp, and s’mores for dessert, our taste buds were in for a treat! 😋🍲🍇🍫

Nature not only gifted us with the two best weather days of the summer, but also gave us stunning sights, like a magnificent sun dog in the sky, the graceful presence of a beaver, and the delicate beauty of sun dew. All found by the talented people in our group! We also listened to the enchanting melodies of whippoorwills and coyotes, truly immersing ourselves in the wonders of the wilderness. 🐺🌅

But what made this trip truly special were the incredible people we met and the engaging conversations we had. Connecting with like-minded souls amidst nature’s beauty was an enriching experience that left a lasting impact. 💫🌿

I can’t express enough gratitude to @pinebarrenspost for organizing this unforgettable adventure. I know how much effort goes into planning such massive undertakings, and this trip was undoubtedly a true gift. 🎁🤍

Paddlepak Recap: Thank you to the 21 paddlers that joined us on the Mullica for the 11+ miles from Atsion to Pleasant Mills.

We do these trips for a few reasons.

We’ve found that sometimes people are intrigued by backpacking trips, but are apprehensive in planning.

We do the planning for you. And pack the meals.

Sometimes people want to challenge themselves personally. We support that, and help along the way. All skill levels are accommodated, from beginners to instructors, first time campers to thru hikers.

Sometimes it’s just better to go with like-minded folks. Our crew is responsible and respectful of the Pines and are most likely photographing plants, bird watching or ID’ing mushrooms.

Dinner was stockpot miso ramen with side fixings and sourdough bread by @fluffyfarms. Dessert was blueberry almond crisp. Coffee, fruit and oatmeal cups for breakfast. Countless snacks were shared amount all.

We had a “f******g beaver” siting next to @secretworldoferin_mak kayak, a surprise visit from @chrisegnoto , whip-poor-wills singing us to sleep and a very nearby pack of coyotes howling in the wee hours of the night.

Thanks again to everyone for making these trips memorable and fun. Next one is Sept 30.

And thanks to @pinelandsadventures for shuttling. The staff is outstanding.

🧘🏽‍♀️ Yoga with @revive_and_rise_yoga
🏕️ Group campsite with running water, picnic tables, porta potties. Capacity 50 people - we were a comfy 20.
🍴 Dinner: tacos all the ways / apple crisp
⛈️ Perfect weather until 9pm when we all ran for cover and rode out the heavy rain until 0500 Sunday morning.
🍴 Breakfast: coffee, quinoa with fruit, birds in a nest w/avocado, bacon
( ☠️ the amount of ticks we pulled off was insane )

Thank you to the folks that joined us, especially to the newcomers that came alone. We are humbled by the continued support.

Next outting is June 3rd. Paddlepak down the Wading River, beginning at Speedwell and camping at Hawkin Bridge. Registration opens next week.
